06 vs 08 and variants - which is better and why?

Bart B used to get up on his soap box and claim the 30-06 would not shoot straight, and the 308 Win would shooting inside any 30-06. He was remembering food fights from the late 1960's when the 308 Win eventually took over the firing line.

It is probable, under controlled conditions, in a wind tunnel, that the 308 Win will shoot tighter groups than a 30-06. However, out in the sun and rain, I think these groups with a 30-06 are adequate for me.

A very good shooting bud I know went on a 30-06 silly safari, and he claimed his X counts at 600 yards never got above ten with a 30-06. He was shooting prone with irons in NRA competition. He he did get higher X counts with his 308. However when I asked him how his 30-06 did at 1000 yards, he had not tried it, but thought the extra 150 fps you can get would be an advantage. I know German Salazar was shooting his 30-06 at the Ben Avery center and posting very good HM scores.

As a target round, the 30-06 kicks too much and you cannot push the bullet to 300 Win Mag levels. The 30 calibers are ballistic chumps compared to the 264, 277 rounds anyway. But, if you plan to use these cartridges on animals, the fact that a 30-06 shoots everything, from 125 to 210 grain well, and is accurate beyond ethical hunting distances, makes this cartridge an excellent choice as an all around hunting rifle.

If you want earth shattering power, I am going to say, you are nuts! Big boomers sure knock the weeds over in front of the firing point, but the blast and recoil cause flinch, which more than obliterates any distance advantage they have. You have to hit at distance for it to count, the shock wave does not do anything on target, or on animal.

The 08 sized case works pretty well for anything from .243 all the way up to 375 raptor, so I would have to give it to the 08 size case on versatility. Although I do own a 25-06 I am not personally interested in an 06 sized case for anything smaller than .284, so I'm going to say I'd rather have the 06 size case from .284" to .375".

I'm in the '06 camp and will stay here, but it's only because this is where I ended up! I can explain. The first centerfire rifle I bought was an M1 Garand. The second centerfire rifle I got was a gift from my wife in .300WM. She bought it on advice from my FIL (why .300WM? Because I liked his .338WM but LH rifles in .338WM are hard to find). Then my FIL gave me all his loading equipment and I jumped into loading. Now I have $$$$ invested in powders that are in the burn rate range for .30-06 to .300WM. I'm not interested in spending the money and days of my life searching for and buying powders in the burn rate range that is appropriate for the .308 and variants.

If I were starting over, I would seriously consider building my infrastructure and inventory around the .308 family. But I'm invested in the '06 and slower powders and there is nothing the .308 family of cartridges can do that my '06 family can't do (a little farther/faster). Besides, I doubt that 1/2" shorter action length makes that much difference. Cut 1" of the barrel of the '06. I bet you'll save as much weight as the short action and still have > MV. Bottom line is there just isn't that much difference between them.

I counseled two new shooters/hunters on their first big game hunting rifle. I steered them to .308/.30-06 (although now I would suggest they also consider 6.5 Manbun). One chose .308 for the cheaper practice ammo (available at the time). The other chose .30-06 so he would have a rifle capable of anything he would ever hunt in NA. Both good choices.

I'm an aught six (AKA 308 Magnum) guy mainly because that's what I started with, it's nostalgic and it gets the job done. I also own guns in .243, 7mm-08 and even 338 Federal so I guess that means I'm also a fan of the 308 variants but I don't own a 308. Maybe because that's what my older, unlikeable brother always had? Not sure.

There are the variants in each caliber that I like the best because reasons.

.243 winchester and its 2nd cousin 6mm creedmoor (I have no use for a 6mm with 45 grains of power behind it but I recognize the utility.

250AI (not really a 308 case but close enough)

260 Rem and its 2nd cousin 6.5 creedmoor

No thank you on the .277"

280AI

30-06

338 Federal

358 Winchester

375 Whelen

If you can't make any sense of the logic behind this, well good, that makes two of us.

I am 46 and like long action rounds. Where does that put me on the "older generation" spectrum?

Almost if not already too old to matter any more, statistically. You’ve bought what you’re going to buy and bought for your kids what you’re going to buy for them, so your influence on current or future trends, if not already moot, soon will be.
