Bart B used to get up on his soap box and claim the 30-06 would not shoot straight, and the 308 Win would shooting inside any 30-06. He was remembering food fights from the late 1960's when the 308 Win eventually took over the firing line.
It is probable, under controlled conditions, in a wind tunnel, that the 308 Win will shoot tighter groups than a 30-06. However, out in the sun and rain, I think these groups with a 30-06 are adequate for me.

A very good shooting bud I know went on a 30-06 silly safari, and he claimed his X counts at 600 yards never got above ten with a 30-06. He was shooting prone with irons in NRA competition. He he did get higher X counts with his 308. However when I asked him how his 30-06 did at 1000 yards, he had not tried it, but thought the extra 150 fps you can get would be an advantage. I know German Salazar was shooting his 30-06 at the Ben Avery center and posting very good HM scores.
As a target round, the 30-06 kicks too much and you cannot push the bullet to 300 Win Mag levels. The 30 calibers are ballistic chumps compared to the 264, 277 rounds anyway. But, if you plan to use these cartridges on animals, the fact that a 30-06 shoots everything, from 125 to 210 grain well, and is accurate beyond ethical hunting distances, makes this cartridge an excellent choice as an all around hunting rifle.
If you want earth shattering power, I am going to say, you are nuts! Big boomers sure knock the weeds over in front of the firing point, but the blast and recoil cause flinch, which more than obliterates any distance advantage they have. You have to hit at distance for it to count, the shock wave does not do anything on target, or on animal.
