This is for those of you who have changed to the hooded rear sight on an AR, why did you go with 1/4 or 1/2 MOA, thanks in advance.

Because the 1/4 min sights will work you to death, to many clicks, especially at 600 yards. 1/2 min sights are all you need.

1/2 MOA should serve you well unless you are one HARD HOLDER with a near-zero wobble area.

As dfugate mentioned, counting clicks on the 1/4 MOA sights can be a pain, but at 600yds that little bit of precision can be nice.

What can really make a difference with a hooded rear sight is the diameter of the aperature.

I'll be getting the WOA hooded sight and it comes with 3 aperatures I just don't know if I should get 1/4 or 1/2moa, my elevation is 1/2moa which I like because I use it more often but I figure windage should be more precise and thats why I am asking for opinions.
btw I've been shooting a long time but I'm just getting into HP competition.

If you already have 1/2 MOA elevation then I'd get the 1/2 MOA windage as well, just for consistency's sake. Keeping it simple means that's one less thing you have to worry about in a match. I'd be afraid that I'd make an elevation adjustment (thinking in 1/2 minute clicks) and then make a windage adjustment, ALSO thinking in 1/2 minute clicks.

Depends on the reticle

For medium to long range varmint guns, I use a Nightforce with 2 MOA hash marks below the main horizontal line. Therefore, I click less. It's nice to have 1/4 clicks when you're sighting in.

Keep in mind that if you can see a change in conditions, it's worth at least a half.

You don't need quarters, but most people like having the option available--it pretty much allows you to hedge you bet just a bit.

"You don't need 1/4's".

I disagree. Here's why.

Everyone should be shooting to be a "hard holder" someday. How can we shoot good high X count 3 and 600 yard scores and not be able to hold under a MOA? The larger our hold is the more out the wide shots will be. With 1/4 min sights we can limit the wide shots by being able to use finer adjustments to build on one side of the X ring or the other to minimize dropped points in letups and dropoffs of wind. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks everyone, and Howard, did you mean "you don't need 1/4's" and yes your post makes sense to me.

While we all strive to shoot for X's, remember that a 100-0X beats a 99-9X any day!

No matter what sights you choose tunnug, it's good to see another competitor getting into the sport. Practice hard and we'll see you at Camp Perry in 2009!

Another good forum for info on highpower shooting is http://www.nationalmatch.us

woa sent me 1/4

Tunnug, you said you were experienced; I am not, yet.

However, I just received the WOA Upper from John a month or so ago and he said I should go with 1/4.

Basically he said "better precision was worth it as long as you know how to count" You will have to do more clicks, but I guess he thought it was worth it once you got there.

the number of clicks on windage really isn't a huge difference most of the time. i mean, it's not like i'm putting 10 minutes of wind on every day. 3 minutes is 6 clicks vs 12 clicks. big deal.

on elevation, where you're putting 15 minutes on every time you go back to six, i could understand some folks not wanting to count to 60. still, just about everybody paints their sights and counts revolutions instead of clicks, which pretty well mitigates the problem.

cavman, I don't know what you mean by experienced, what I said was I've been shooting for a while (plinking, metal target, hunting, just fun, etc.) but just beginning competitive shooting so I appreciate everyone's input, thank you.
