Just checked through my reloading supplies and discovered I have no rifle powder that will do 30-30, 308, and 30-06. I use Hogdon Powders and Accurate Powders.

Given that as your choices, which 1 powder would you use for all three calibers in 150g and 168g? I prefer to buy a large container of 1, rather than juggle 2 or 3. Bullets will be boat tail or bevel base jacketed. Obviousle 30-30 requires soft point.

Technically, .30-30, .308, and .30-06 are the same caliber: 30cal. But they are different cartridges. Anyway, semantics aside, try Varget or H4895.

I agree 4895 would probably cover all 3 rounds best. You might look at IMR3031 too since that powder works very well with the .308 and 30-30 Winchester. (though the 30-06 might suffer)

Varget or either of the 4895's as stated...they work in most average cartidges pretty well. After looking through Hodgdon's site...my favorite IMR 4064 will work for sure in all....great powder 4064

Thank you folks! I am going to a show this weekend and hope to pick up some supplies. Misc. bullets and powder. Might fondle a rifle or two.

Update!

Went to the gunshow. They had powder for left handed Caliber 44 1/2, for 803 Russian and ...... One guy selling powder and only oddball stuff. Over $20 a pound. Did not find anybody selling rifle bullets. Picked up some various and sundry supplies but left generally disappointed with the experience. Place was packed, rude people, punks, gangbangers, tatooed freaks, one guy with horn implants (yeah I know I am old, but come on get real!)

Went to Sportsmans Warehouse and picked up 150 gr soft nose for .18 a bullet. Have some I bought years ago for .165 so not too bad an increase. Checked for powder and discovered Varget will work for .223, 30-30, .308 and 30-06. Its the short cut stuff and one of my buds who works there tells me it meters well. So I guess the old dog needs to change and work up some new load data with the new stuff.

Should be fun!

IMR4895. It's the powder that d@mn near covers everything, except magnum cartridges.

Don

Interestingly enough, I've had good results with it in a .300WBY Mag. I have 180gr soft points running at 2850-2875fps. Decent group size.

In fact, the group size was a little better than IMR4831, though the velocity was not as high. Then again, what can 180gr at a MV of 2850fps not accomplish in hunting North American game? I don't reallty need 3000, and my shoulder thanks me for the lighter recoil. :)

I have used Olin 748 for years in these calibers mentioned as well as in my 223 and 222. Byron
