10/22 feed issues. Butler Creek mag. Help

I have a brand new Ruger 10/22 and new Butler Creek magazines. I'm having trouble with jams . Both magazines act the same. I get a Jam especially on the first chambered round. After the first it is better but still jams often. The first one upon rack will almost always jam. If you wiggle the mag it will usually chamber. I'm hoping this is just because both are brand new. And yes that mag is all the locked when jamming occurs. I have a buddy that shooting the exact same set up with zero feed issues, only difference is he has thousands of rounds through his. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Plastic feed lips?

I have found that the Factory Ruger mags work 100% all others is a crap shoot.... I have had Better luck with metal feed lips though.

I recommend getting Ruger magazines. They are not expensive, they don't stick out of the bottom of the rifle asking to be run into something and broken and most importantly they work.

Some 10/22s can be finicky. I also hear the Butler Creeks with steel lips are more reliable but I was cheap and bought the plastic-lipped ones. Between a buddy and me we had four 10/22s and some didn't want to cycle with the Butler Creeks and some ran flawless.

Buy factory mags or maybe rugers 25 rounder but there is a thingy out that joins 3 factory mags together for the barn the barrel down crowd.

+1 for the Ruger. They can be disassembled which is one thing the Butler Creeks always lacked for me. And Ruger factory mags tend to be very reliable in my experience.

When I first got my 10/22, I tried some aftermarket larger mags, and they didn't work great. I noticed that the factory mags worked fine, and ended up buying extras of those instead of larger ones.
The Rimfire Central would be a good place to try if you want to try and get that magazine to work. I know there are some larger magazines that are reportedly reliable, but they are expensive.

This was my experience as well. I tried the cheaper plastic-lipped BC mags and since they worked well enough for me I bought a bunch more and that was all I used. I didn't bother paying extra for the metal feed lips but some guns may need them.

I've never had a problem with Butler Creek Steel Lips magazines.

It's really hit and miss. There was a time, 15 or 20 years ago, all three of my 10/22s would run flawlessly with any BC magazine that I stuck in them. Now, 15 or 20 years later, my BC hotlips mags got worn out, so what did I go out and buy? More BC mags, and guess what? Of the half dozen that I bought, only one of them will work in both of the rifles I now have. Two won't work in either, one will only work in one and the remaining two only work in the other. It was a PITA. When the opportunity arose to buy buy ten of the factory mags that were used, I jumped on them. Never a problem with factory.

Ruger has factory made 10/22 25 round magazines. I've heard they function great. I think Rugers 25 rounder is a fairly new product. As for your mags, they are what they are.

I use the red lips because they were cheaper and they seem to feed fine in my 10/22. My brother on the other hand his 10/22 wont fire more then 2 shots without jamming. I think that every 10/22 is just different. Steel lips might fix the problem though

I couldn't get my 10/22 to run with any of the non-Ruger mags until I replaced the extractor with a Volquartson "Exact Edge". Afterwards even the cheap Ram-Line and Eagle have worked fine.

If the problem is feeding, you've probably got a bad mags or ammo it doesn't like (Remington bulk pack often gives trouble even in Ruger 10 round factory mag). But if the problem is the empties aren't ejecting, replace the extractor, its only like $15.


Also look for burrs on the tops of the mags, these can knock the empty off the extractor before they make it to the ejector. This helped with some of my mags, but the extractor replacement was my real solution.

I got a new Ruger 10/22 for Christmas about 23 years ago, still have it, still a great plinker and still dead on. Anyway, around the same time I got three Ramline 30rd mags for it. Two of them messed up this year the other is still running. If they still make them, there great and last with countless rds put through them. Just got a 32rd Promag for it today, it has metal lips and I'm hoping they are as good as the Ramline. I had the same problem with my sks when i whittled out for a 30rd mag. The mag was just a hair off so it didnt feed good at first just like yours getting jammed every few rds. Luckily I needed to take more out instead of took to much out.So just rack it back real slow and see what the rd is doing in there. May have a bad mag.

i have 2 butler creek steel lips they work fine with 20 rounds but get pretty iffy on first 5 if loaded to the full 25 round capacity i also have 4 eagle mags and they have been flawless
