My 10/22 is practically brand new (maybe only a couple bricks through it) and it jams every other round. I'm shooting some $5 a brick federal and using butler creek 25 rounders (plastic feed lips and steel). If i load only about 9 or 10 in the mag the rifle shoots fine, maybe one jam everyonce in a while, but if i load all 25 or close to it i get jams every other round. All sorts of jams too.. failure to feed, failure to extract, failure to eject, double feed. I'm thinking it is just a coincidence that when I do not load to full capacity that they seem to feed ok. I think I've just got a bad run of ammo. I've gotten this type of performance from two bricks now but they are the same lot of ammo I believe.

what do you guys think

The problem is the butler creek 25 rounders.. Use the factory mags and see if the problems still happen. Those mags are junk. Look for Tactical Innovotations 50 rounders, they are the best extended mags available.

If you're still really set on the 25 rounders, you can move the mgas up down left right or whatever and if it shoots well in that position, maybe you can shim it so its always in that position..

My gut feeling is that it is the mags. The first thing I would do is try the ammo you have in your 10 round factory mags, if the magazine loading thing is a coincidence as you believe, you should experience the same rate of failure using the 10 rounders, however, you'll have to make sure you shoot as many rounds as you would from the other mags before having a failure.

If you still have failures, invest another $5 on a different brand of ammo and give it a run through both types of magazines.

If another brand still gives you problems, I'd give the thing a good cleaning and try it all again, as those cheap rounds can be dirty as hell.

the action is dirty but not so much as to impede proper function. it is probably a combination of cheapo mags and crappy ammo. How much are those tactical innovations 50 rounders, like $60?

yeah 'round $60.. I have not had any issues with my factory mags.. Even with crappy ammo.. The Tactical mags are adjustable so if it doesnt work, you can adjust it until it works, thats the beauty of them. I just hope you cleaned the 10/22 before you shot it becuase theres a lot of factory gunk in it that can affect the reliablity.

Give the RUGER 10/22 a good cleaning first

Start w/ a GOOD cleaning of the rifle first. Second: try another Mag. Third: Try another brand of ammo. Go with a MINI MAG w/ plenty of power to cycle the bolt. :uhoh:

That little RUGER 10/22 is a proven, reliable rifle. :) Start with the bacis, CLEAN it first, with just a little oil to lightly lubercate. Don't over do it w/ the oil.

I can't speak on the Butler Creek mags.

Good LUCK

Mattw;

I'm also in the ditch the mags camp. Also try several different types of ammo. The American Eagle (Federal) $7.00 a brick stuff always works through a 10/22, though it may be lacking in accuracy.

Butler Creeks have never given me an issue in the past on my 10/22....

As others have said, sanitize the old girl, then try some diffrent ammo...get some Green-Box yellowjackets, mebbe some Winchester Wildcats, and some CCI mini-mags....if you REALLY want to get exotic, try some of that Velociter ammo...I like how it shoots out of my 10/22....
