Is it doing the same thing with several different brands of ammo?

Is it a factory Ruger barrel, or an aftermarket target barrel?

Is the extractor clearance cut in the barrel shank clean & free of fouling?

If the extractor is still slipping off the case rim and leaving the case in the chamber, it almost has to be an extractor clearance problem when the bolt is fully closed.

Or, a bur or something in the chamber.
Do the cases that stick have any scratches or marks on them when you get them out?

You might want to pull the barrel out of the receiver so you can get a better look at the chamber.
And also whats going on with the extractor clearance when the bolt is in battery against the end of the barrel.

With my 10/22 I need to keep the extractor groove in the barrel free from powder fowling or I have the same problem. I had a Romanian M-69 that would not extract shell cases well, the extractor was being pushed off the shell case by the barrel groove when the bolt closed, I had to grind on the extractor to fix the problem.

make sure the barrel is tight in the reciever and has not rotated, that can bind up the extractor in the extractor slot on the bbl.

that block that holds the bbl to the reciever with the two allens can loosen with time .
also did you go with the new factory extractor or an after market? some of the after market have a different profile on the hook side which helps .

ditto on rcmodels dope on the chamber burr, if you dry fire alot it will cause a burr at the location of the firing pin, remove the bbl. so you can inspect this area well. need to use snap caps if you dry fire alot.

Not one single bad idea here! On the otherhand, I cured the same problem by simply installing a Power Custom Sharp Claw Extractor. I got it from Brownells--it was about $8 or $9. Absolutely no problem since.

Moosehunt is correct Power Custom has a winner item. I have had 0 FTE since I installed it in a almost worn out 10/22.

Maybe bear this thought in mind. When a blowback gun like the 10/22 is fired, the extractor does not pull the case out of the chamber - the case pushes itself out of the chamber and pushes the bolt back. The extractor acts only to hold the case for the ejector.

That's more than a dead on point, Mr. Keenan. Really dead on. Still, the change solved the problem for me, completely. Maybeso it is related to a better grip back to the ejector??

What Jim said.

Either a very weak round barely operating the bolt or maybe the scope mount screws protruding inside the receiver enough to rub against the bolt. With all of the after market parts floating around could be a heavy cocking handle/guide rod designed for the HM2 round. Need more info

Jim Keenan, the statement you made on the blowback operation of the 10-22 , turned that little light bulb on in this thing that i call a brain (it's that little bump that sits on the end of my neck) .

thats how my Baretta MDL 21-A pocket pistol extracts the spent case without an extractor.

will wonders ever cease!

thanks for the heads up daggerdog

try polishing the chamber, and chamber mouth with fine steel wool, dont go crazy with it though, polishing the chamber will help the case slide out easier, inless you can give more info i really cant draw reasonable conclusions...
is it a factory barrel or aftermarket, standard or match chamber?
scope mounting screws rubbing against the bolt?
barrel mounted correctly, ejector worn?
---another thing with the sttel wool, if its a match chamber you might want to leave it alone, polishing a match chamber will degrade accuracy,

with a little bit of work you can turn a 10/22 into a proverbial AK that just wont stop

I agree with "moosehunt" and "gunnerh"... A new Power Custom extractor cured my 10/22 as well.. Had problems with extraction and ejection and got hot powder dust in my face.. Not too nice... Now it´s as new...

volquartsen custom exact edge extractor

i haven't had an eject or extraction problem since a trip to carroll ia. to visit them!

Yank it out.

There is one way to eliminate the extractor from the equation. Simply remove it and see if the problem persists. Every 10/22 I've ever owned ran just fine without it. When you think about it, being a blow-back design, the extractor only functions when unloading an unfired round. The factory extractor is usually more than enough with a factory barrel. The problems start when people swap for after-market barrels with bentz and target chambers.
