10/22 or SKS for Apt. Defense?

being that I personally know

three people who have been shot at close range with .22's
I would choose an SKS and make sure I didn't miss, which is easy to do
at close range. & we are talking about an apt.

I know three adult males shot at close range with .22's
(before I got sober I sometimes ran with people that other people felt the need to shoot)
Anyway, each one of these three guys wrestled the gun away from the shooter and beat them up.

I have a feeling a 7.62x.39 will have a markedly different out come.

I'd keep the bayonet on the gun m'self, but that's just me. Somebody who wants to grab your gun's muzzle is gonna think twice after grabbing the bayonet... though I believe a real bayonet has at least a 12-inch blade. That thing might deter an attack... or not. Might be a liability in court, might not be...

Maybe a shotgun would be a good choice - lots of cheap single-shots and pump guns. Myriad of ammo for them - birdshot, squirrel shot, buckshot...

How about a 9mm carbine?

Why not ? If your going out to purchase something , the Hi-Point 9mm carbine runs about the same cost as a SKS or a 10/22 . Around $200 , I don't see that as a bad choice ,and personaly could make a case for the 9mm over either the .22LR or the 7.62 X 39 for HD apartment use.

Seriously, you would use a .22 for home defense when you have another option?.

If a situation occured where you would actually have to shoot somebody to stop them from killing you, would you grab your .22 over a 7.62 x 39?.

The whole point of arming yourself to defend your life is to STOP the perpetrator. Shooting somebody with a .22 may kill them... 20 minutes later because they bleed to death... and in those 20 minutes they're gonna wring your little neck, because you've just really pissed them off.

What if the bad guy has a gun too?. You get the first shot off with your .22, which, surprisingly, fails to stop him, and then he unloads his 9mm right into you (or, if you're lucky, he has a .22 also, and you both survive another 20 minutes before bleading to death).

The Four Rules always apply, always. Owning a firearm does not allow you to endanger other lives.

One of the saddest cases I worked as a LEO was a hilljack who had a bad day at work, came home and took the frustration's of his continued bad judgments out on his bedroom wall with his CKC. His bedroom was adjacent to his 3 year old daughter's room (yes, she took one right in the forehead, big mess). Inbreeding and firearms just don't mix.:(

Rule #4. If your apartment is like the ones I used to live in, I would get a pistol with some Magsafes and would be putting book cases along the walls where I would most likely have to shoot.

Used revolvers start at $250 or so. Do not use money as an excuse, get a loan, get a second job, do something, sell your rifles. Get the right tool, get it checked out, then do everything you can to ensure you never have to use it.

Aha! That one is now in El Bikerbo's vocabulary. Can't wait 'till I dazzle my Bros down at the scooter shop tommorow.

"Hey! Heavy! You harelipped, slew-footed two sandwich eatin' a day hilljack! How's it goin'?"

Biker:)

If he doesn't have enough money for a proper self defense weapon, where will the lawyer fee come from when the next door neighbor sues for property damage (assuming he doesn't hit someone). Get a .410 or 20 gauge with #9 shot, I'd really like to see the SOB who is left standing (functioning) after a blast of birdshot to the face from 3 - 5 yards. SKS, jeez!!!

I should let you edit my english papers! Yar. :neener:

had the same choices

when I was younger and just moved into my place i owned a 1o/22 a sks and a 870 shotgun. the shotgun seems like it would be good but to long cant turn corners. sks is long too and it will shoot through walls, and jams the ruger was my choice 10 rounds, light, carbine, short enough to go around corners, and a well placed 22 bullet can be a bad thing for a intruder

"Who you callin two sammich eatin??!!!" :neener:

Use the SKS. Bigger hammer. If you come up with a couple hundred bucks (save $10 here and there when you can and when you sell back your books at the end of the term don't blow it on booze and loose women) get a remington 870 or a Mossberg 500 and you'll have a great HD weapon (lasts much longer than the booze and women also!)

What's a basic Remington 870 go for at Wal-Mart (or a used one at a local pawn shop)? I expect it can't be much more than $250.

Being a broke college student sucks, but if you're concerned about HD this is one expense worth putting on a credit card and paying off a few bucks at a time.

And, as discussed in the "what do you do for gun money" thread - there's always the option of selling plasma. Put a shotgun on credit and visit the "donation center" for $30 a week until it's paid off.

I just had the luck to thouroughly check out the new H&R PArdner Pump 12. Ga...

REMINGTON took THEIR OWN PATENT for the ORIGINAL 870 overseas and had an H&R factory reproduce them as the "Pardner Pump"...

I was INCREDIBLY impressed... 3" chamber, Remchokes, metal trigger housing, NO lock, smooth as an 870 should be, barrels interchangable with any 870 Express mag part, nice wood corncob forend, NICE gun...

my local sporting goods store can get them new, all day long, for $179.99... this thing is a REAL 870 Express Mag, in ALL BUT NAME... my dealer says he thinks he can go a mass purchase and possibly run them for sale at $150 and make money...

Even a poor college kid could afford $150.00 or so, and a hacksaw blade... save a little more, and you could just get an 18" barrel too, and keep the long one for clay-busting...

Leave the dove loads for dove attacks. That shot will only penetrate a few inches and just piss the guy off. I'd use a .22 before tiny bird shot.

on that note, Grizzly, does your school have a Med or Dental school? If so, you can make a fair amount of extra money by participating in research studies. My dental school almost always has a toothpaste or retainer study going on. I'm currently a subject in a bird flu vaccine study that I'll get $400 for. It's largely paying for my AR-15.

I just realized how crazy my post sounds, but I'm completely serious, and any study that's looking for volunteers is almost certainly safe. The vaccine I received is no more risky than a regular flu vaccine

Just looked at the H&R site, they offer a Pardner Pump Protector - tacticool black, 18.5". Someone on gunbroker is selling them for $163.50 - think I may have to get one of those myself.

Thanks for the heads up on that, I'd never heard of it.

buckshot

I wouldnt say theres anything for apt defense better than a shotgun. some 00 buck and youll be fine. apts have thin walls and I always keep the shotgun by the bed side. I bought my mossberg 500 used for 110 dollars. those rifles will kill them dead, but pellets arent going to be as dangerous to hit other people in a building. a blast of 00 buck has tremendous stopping power.

See there? 163.50 WITH the 18.5" barrel... it REALLY IS an old style 870...

Even a poor college kid can usually find THAT kinda diniero in fairly short order... as mentioned... sell plasma, test experimental drugs... sell your body... (not really, unless you can get a good price, LOL)

borrow the money, whatever... just get the right tool...
