Can someone please tell me what type of wood the factory 10/22 carbine stock is made of?

I sanded it down to bare wood when I opened up the barrel channel for a bull barrel and Im ready to restain it. I would like to get it as colse to the factory finish as possible.

Thanks.

I agree it's birch, or some other cheap wood.

But that's not what color it is.

10/22 stocks used to be walnut, and I think that is what they are trying to make the white birch look like with the stain they use now..

my 1971 is nice walnut with a blued steel buttplate. new ones are birch with a walnutish colored stain and a very very cheap plastic buttplate that breaks easily.

It depends on the model and when it was made. Over the years Ruger has used Walnut, Maple, and Birch on wood stocked 10/22s. Most newer standard 22s use Birch. However Walnut has been used for many years on the 10/22 Deluxe model at least thru 2007. The deluxe models can be ID with the factory rubber butt pad that is more straight and checkering s/p?. Not sure about current Deluxe models.

I know you said you wanted it stock. But you may look at Minwax "Gunstock" oil based stain might be #231 off the top of my head. It makes for a nice color that stands out. Than seal it off with some Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane available in clear satin, semi gloss, or clear gloss for a very durable finish.

Just wanted to add keep in mind there is many different Walnut shades in stain. And every brand is slightly different. Matching the factory color is not an easy task.
