Took a whack at 1260 yards with the .308 shooting 168 gr smk...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmJzRt0lALg

The day before this I shot a .56 moa 5 shot group at 960 yards.
I realize it Is well past its supersonic flight. Just had to see for my self how it would do. HAHA

Watch the video to the end. I show you some recovered misses

Man. I always look forward to your postings. I so enjoy your videos.

I guess those bullets were tumbling as they went subsonic, enh? That was a great way to start my morning. Keep it up!

Thank you stubbicatt, I am glad someone is watching them lol

I just ran some numbers...

The 168 SMK was going 1000 FPS at target, and took 17.5 Mil to get there

I have shot the 155 SMK PALMA out of my gun at 3029 FPS, But only at 200 yards, But according to my figures this bullet would arrive at target at 1233 FPS, and take 11.9 Mil to get there.

Good shooting, good photography.Too bad the camera didn't have parallax adj. ! Lol!

From some research I did yesterday after your 960 yard video it would seem that your 168 VLDs would be a better choice for that range. The 168 SMKs are known to start having issues when going transonic. The heavier 175 or the 168 VLDs tend to not have these issues. From the calculations I did with the 168 VLD at 2700 FPS you would be right around 1050-1100 FPS at 1260 yards.

Ive always stuck with the 175 SMKs but recently bought some 178 AMAXs but haven't really shot them at range yet. Longest was 500.

Based on the flattened and torn up sides of the bullets, I say they were all tumbling, and hit at odd angles. A clean hit on the plate would result in a flat slug, or maybe a smashed front end of the bullet.

I doubt they were tumbling, maybe wobbling a tiny bit.

That's some good shooting! If you can, try to get a through the scope shot next time.

Thanks for posting.

Excellent video Clayne, the longest range we have out here is in Kingman, Az at 1000 yards. My personal range is but 650 yards or so.

looks like the bullets might have been wobbly but it also depends on what they hit. looks like the nose did hit first but the low speed and angle downward from the arc, made the most impact on the front side, in front of the ogive.

those bullets could not have tumbled and reached the target. nice video clayne and a nice rifle. I would love to see you use 178 Amax bullets. I feel you would make way more hits. the 168 grain are not that good at that range but they did surprisingly well. it seemed you had the wind doped but had trouble with the drop which you would think would be close to each other. it took a lot of work to make that video too bad you used the 168's

Nice videos as always. As I was watching, I couldn't help but think this was a great visual representation of the maximum effective range concept which is usually just a number in a military manual (M4 carbine: 500m point target).

Clearly, 1260 yds is beyond the max. eff. range of that rifle/ammo (168 SMK) combination, no matter how good the shooter, the rifle/ammo just can't get it done.

Of course "effective" has to be defined for any given weapon system in terms of target size and acceptable hit percentage, I just thought it was neat to see the rifle/ammo capability clearly well exceeded, I've never seen that on video before. I've seen videos of good shooters at long range hitting and poor shooters missing.

strambo those bullets even being the wrong ones were hitting plenty hard enough to put in some hurt. if he used 178 amax there would have been even better results and 1260 yds would be in its effective range. all the talk about 50 cals 338 lapuas have made people think of the 308 as a black powder gun firing a roundball

Something I have found appealing is the 155 grain Scenars from Lapua, shot in the small rifle primer Lapua cases with RL15. I intend to do some more experimentation with this combination in effort to get the ES down as low as possible.

FWIW.

believe or not Rel 15 does not leave copper in my barrel. the military asked for a powder like that and Rel 15 was the answer. CFE 223 also

The 155 gr Lapua Scenars are indeed good bullets. Last week was my first time shooting past 1,000 with a .308 nd out of a 26" barrel the rounds were leaving at a tad over 3,000 fps. It took 9.5 mils of elevation to make the hits, but it is definitely a capable bullet.

keep up the good work!

threads about shooting are so much more interesting than threads about hardware
