I think with .223, .22-250 and .204 you will get bored with 100 yards really fast. At any rate, all three will do perfectly and you can move out to 200 or 250 yards very easily with them--especially .22-250.

I have a pre-accu-trigger Savage 93R17. It is easily a .500" rifle and with some patience and a calm morning, it is damn near a .330" rifle. Buy one, then go to www.sharpshootersupply.com and buy a new stock and trigger and have a blast.

usually a 1/2" rifle based on what? because you have one?

Sure but you don't neccessarily need to spend that much. I have a remington sps that was just over $400 with the rebate and it shoots in the .4's, and I've had a number of 3 shot groups in the high .2's. So maybe I should just say buy a $400 remington if you want a 1/4" rifle.

apples to apples. Federal ammo runs from $17.50 for plinkers to $25.00 for premium(20). Try shooting that good with $10 box stuff.
There is black hills ammo all over gunbroker(and at cabelas locally) for ~ $26 per 50 for the redbox stuff. The once fired brass blue box is even less. I shot above groups with black hills, but don't take my word for it, aside from federal gmm, black hills is regarded as top shelf target ammo by most people who shoot alot. And if you are paying $17.50per 20 rounds for plinker .223, someone is laughing all the way to the bank.
Good 17hmr ammo runs $11 for 50.
OK

I use a 22 LR single shot. It doubles as a stand in for my 45-70. The trajectories are similar enough that if you learn one you know the other.

I would say if you want to get the most for each dollar spent just about anything sold by Savage will do for you.

The .223 was originally a target round and I think based on the .222. The .22-250 is faster but unneccesary at 100 yards. The .223 is widely available in good rifles. I recommend a heavy barrel bolt action, but ar15 are very popular. I would go with that in the best scope and rifle you can afford if you want better wind performance than a rimfire. There are lots of rounds that are less popular but good for 100 yard shooting.
But I would consider a high quality target rifle in .22lr. This can range from an
international smallbore target quality rifle as used in olympics, to target model
Ruger or savage. Look at older model 22 target rifles too. I shot rifles used in biathalon competion as a trainer, and they are very accurate at that range. Plus you can use the olympic target stance offhand.
The .22 mag in a decent rifle would be fun and challenging too. I think a high power may get boring and unpleasant at that range. But there are lots of alternatives. Get a good spotting scope.
