I was thinking over the 38 Long Colt DA 38. I have one that turns 100 this year. I have a SAW veteran also. I am wondering what caused the demise of the 38 LC? S&W made Navy revolvers in 38 S&W. S&W Army revolvers were made in 38 Long IIRC. The Colts were pretty standard in 6" 38 LC. When nitro replaced black powder, why not load the 38 LC to nitro magnum status? The liability was still a factor. The 38 Special, 38-44 and 357 Magnum of the future all chamber in 38 LC revolvers. NOT SAFE! What were the designers thinking in creating the 38 LC? It didn't work well in the PI. The old Colt SAAs were reissued in 45 LC. The 38 LC seems to be a rara avis caliber. To my mind, there was a LOT of potential to the round. 41 Army or 41 LC might have been developed into hot nitro Magnums sooner also. I simply wonder why not? I understand that metalurgy and magnums weren't a priority or science back then.
