1000 yarder

I just received the schedule for some matches next year in central Arkansas and noticed there were several 1000yd matches on there.

I've shot in the 600yd matches, but have been seriously thinking about just trying out a 1000yd match.

The load I use right now for the 600yd is:
.308 Win
SMK 155gr Palma
44.5gr IMR 4895
Win Case
CCI 250

I get an average MV of 2750.

Would this be sufficient to reach the 1000yd mark, or should I do my workup with another powder I have?

I have a load using SMK 175gr with 2000MR that is getting around 2675, with no pressure signs.

I'm thinking that if I did a workup with the 2000MR with the SMK 155gr Palma, I might be able to get around the 2900 mark with an accurate load staying within the min/max range for that powder.

many clubs have a league practice shoot during the week where the range is open. you might check to see if you can go test it before you shoot a match

I thought about that, but don't have time during the week to test it out.

I'm not a member of any club, I just show up to the matches since they allow NRA members to shoot in them. Lol

With the Ballistic AE app I have, the adjustment would be 37 up, which I have with my base and scope but of course, sometimes that relates different in the real world. Lol

Sierra's 30 caliber Palma bullets, the 155's, need to leave the barrel at least this much for them to be decently supersonic at 1000 yards in 60 deg. temperature; the 2155's their original one and the 2156 is their new one with a bit higher BC:

2155, 2800 fps
2156, 2700 fps

Your load should do OK.

Awesome thank you sir. I may go ahead and do a workup with the 2000MR anyway. I know I should get better MV and have the some accuracy with it. Only thing I don't like is that it really likes the upper end of the scale before it starts to show great accuracy.

I know guys shooting the 155's and they are pushing the things closer to 3000 fps in long barreled palma rifles. I don't know what happens when the 155's go subsonic, but the 175's don't have a problem.

Personally, I would use the 175's first. It takes about 24 MOA to go from 600 to 1000 yards with my 175's.

JW I note you did not mention barrel length. If you are shooting a 24 or 26 I would go with the 175 SMK or the 175 Berger. I am certain that they will probably be traveling faster than the 155 at 800 and maybe at 600. The 155 gr Lapua Scenar is probably a good choice as well.

Just from a quick review from the data I have here which gets me to 500.

A 180 at 2500 is 1744 at 500
A 165 at 2600 is 1752 at 500
A 155 at 2750 is 1799 at 500

So you are still faster at 500 however at 600 the higher BC bullets will surpass the 155gr.

Most ao the people shooting 155's at 1000 yards are shooting 30 and 32 inch barrels.

I'm just shooting a short 22" barrel right now for the 600yd. I do have in the plans though of getting a better F-Class rifle.

I enjoyed the several comps I did too much. LOL.

We have a 2000 yard range set up on the old family farm and I often shoot my Custom Remmy 700 SPS AAC-SD Bedded in a B&C Medallion Varmet Stock at 1000 yards with respectable results. I use Lapua Brass, Varget Powder and 175 SMKs. I am told this load will stay supersonic out to 1100 yards but have no way of measuring it. The secret to shooting .308 or any caliber at 1000 yards lies in quality Glass and a very steady rest and lots of practice! Generally anything past 800 yards I use my .300 win mag in the same setup.

BC is really going to start coming into play at 1000 yards. At my home range, we have a lot of room to shoot (out to 2200 yards). In long range competitive shooting, the .308 guys are shooting 208 gr Amax or HDY BTHP. Varget typically. I don't know anyone shooting lighter than a 175 gr BTHP at 1000+ since wind moves those bullets around a lot.

A friend of mine can blast away at steel at 1 mile away. He uses the 208 Hdy BTHP Match.

1000 yards has been my own goal this last year. I've been using the 155 palmas in my 700P with 46.7 varget. I'm getting 2865 average with a 11 SD. Best group so far is 3.25 at 500. This load is 3/10's from max load with Varget.

It's important to keep the bullet supersonic to avoid disruption in flight.
