If I were competing, it might be worth the extra $2 a box for more consistent ammo.

If I ever saw any difference in my score that could be attributed to the ammo, I'd agree.

But seriously, I've shot STS, AA, and my own handloads with various components including an IMO "best-of" mix of STS and AA components. I'm still set up to reload, but until I get something like STS shot for under $25 a bag again, it just doesn't make sense to me, to spend the time.

YMMV :)

I had problems with the Winchester universal 12 ga in three differant guns The federal and Remington worked fine

Thanks guys for the advice, I will not go with the winchesters as many people says its not good. I just shoot for fun I really dont care what loads I use as long as there not cheap $4 box that has poorly made primmers/powerds and going cause jamming and other harm to the shotgun.

Just bought a 4 pack of federal 20 gauge 7/8 ounce 7.5s for 20 bucks and change at wallyworld. Had to go renew my hunting license, so picked up a 4 pack. We might go shoot some clays this afternoon for practice. :D I've got a couple of boxes of old 12 gauge dove loads I need to shoot up, too.

The Walmart promos are as good as I need for dove and a bit of skeet now and then. I always buy 7.5s though. Too many cripples with 8s. I've not had a misfire or FTF with the el cheapos yet and I've been using them for a lot of years.

Hmm, AB, methinks that good shot should be used on stuff that can suffer, while most clay shot opps can be handled by gereric bulk pack.

My dove load for the last 30 years or so has been trap loads of 7.5s. These days I use reloads, 7/8 oz at 1200 FPS through appropriate chokes. Hard round shot not only stays together better, it carries more energy to the target. Out around 30-35 yards, that makes a difference just like Bruce says.

And the difference could be a bird dying right now instead of later.

The West Coast shot I use runs about $30 a bag. That's about the best price I see recently.

Hard does not necessarily mean "best".

Note the trouble that people see with round steel shot at moderate velocity not being the best at killing birds. There's no deformation or expansion.

Ever drop some STS on a hardwood floor? I spent a good hour picking the stuff up, and it still was under furniture a year later. It bounces and rolls like ball bearing balls. It's very round, and very hard.

Not too easy on the teeth, either.

Sure, crappy stuff that doesn't pattern well is not a great choice for hunting. But STS is made to break clays, not necessarily to kill birds.

That said, doves aren't that hard to kill. Hard shot will do it fine, as will nearly everything else. Then again, I don't shoot them with 12 Gauges, anyway, so trap loads would be irrelevant.:) 7/8 @ 1200 Remington 20 Gauge Sport Loads work every bit as well as STS, IMO. And I haven't seen STS shot in bags for a while one way or another.

i use the $20 cheep fed. 4 pack for small game +trap shooting when i can get off time to go.It works great in my mossberg 500:neener:

AB,
Don't think anyone was talking steel shot, only high antimony(STS) shot ! Yes it is somewhat harder and alot rounder than chilled shot, it is not that much more $$ / bag than chilled. I really don't think STS( high antimony) shot is any better at hiding under the furniture either! By using high antimony shot(lighter) you gain FPS over chilled because most loaders drop by volume not by weight, you also get more by number of shot per bag.

The Federal & Winchester bulk packs are fine. I have run a ton of it through my guns. The only thing I have run into is my Saiga 12 likes the Federal, but not the Winchester. My 870 eats the Winchester fine though.

and the inverse...the 870 express i had hated the Federal. go figure. I think a lot of guns once broken in won't mind most any ammo, though.

For the record I prefer the Federal.

Then you've never chased it.

The point is, it doesn't deform any more than steel does, when it hits a bird.

There is also shot that's harder than chilled, but softer than 6% Antimony.

I have chased chilled, hard and steel shot!
Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought birdshot needed to stay "round" so as to put more shot in the killing zone rather than have them fly off into a stray pattern outside of the kill zone which is what deformed shot do. Never knew that birdshot had to mushroom like a rifle bullet to kill a bird. The hard shot also "cuts" feathers better than soft as to get to the vitals of a game bird.
Yes there are harder shot than chilled ...3%, 4%, or even 5% !

At sacramento area wal-marts they only have the $20 value packs in 7.5 and 8 shot. They've told me this is all they sell for that price. Any other shot size costs more. Just worth keeping in mind that you don't have much choice.

Can you believe my local Wal-Marts here in south San Diego don't sell either guns or ammo. The $20 packs sound like a good deal, especially after seeing the prices at last months gun show.

Go to the Wal-Mart off Aero Drive, 163 & Clairemont Mesa, or the Santee Wal-Mart.

They have ammo.

orphanedcowboy, I am not really a huge fan of what Walmart has done to small town America either, however I do believe in a free market, and I do shop there. Call me a hypocrite I guess.

What I find interesting is that you mail order from a place that gets ammo cheap because they buy in bulk. Same as Walmart. Buying through the internet is not exactly supporting the local economy either is it?

Then you've never lived in a REAL small town, where the ability to go buy household staples like toilet paper late at night, for a good price, is a real godsend.

When Wal-Mart came to Juneau, AK, most shelves were bare after the first day. It was a near riot, there was so much pent-up demand for basic goods.

There $22 and the regular packs are like $7 so 4 packs is $24 or the value pack for $22

OP,

Forgive me if I am mistaken, but if the regular single box is $7 then wouldn't 4 of those equal $28?

If the bulk pack is $22 then you are saving ~$6, right? Sounds like it is worth it to me for over 20% cost savings.

LOL

What, were you homeschooled or something?:D

In public school, paying $28 instead of $22 is a good deal. The teacher's union says so, so it is so.

i use the el-cheapo shells from walmart (3-11/8-8) for trap 2 nights a week 150 rounds. what i found out is the win and rem use a shot wrap instead of a one piece wad, the federals do have a one piece wad. i am no expert at trap and only shoot in the low20,s to 24 if i do my part. i think i am at the top of my game so the savings are real to me. i may shoot a strait 25 if i am at my best and the trap gods look the other way. but i am not holding my breath. eastbank.
