After reading a few posts here and being the owner of a new 44 navy BP pistol, and being unable to find # 11 percussion caps, I had to try the plastic ring caps. I found them lacking the necessary crack to ignite the charge. However after adding a german made strip cap to the plastic ring caps they did indeed allow me the satisfaction of getting off a few shots. I also found that by removing the paper in the plastic caps I get even better fire by adding the strip cap. Yes it is time consuming but......I'm shooting.

Well, I tried it yesterday on my Pietta '51. First two fired, 4 duds. Better, but not 100 percent. Probably work on my ROA, but so do my Tap-o-Caps which maypop on my Piettas, too. I'm going to buy a set of small wire gauge drill bits if I can find some and drill the nipples a little bigger one of these days.

#11's seem to be coming back a bit. I have seen them in stock lately at both Bass Pro and Cabelas

my Piettias and myUberti both prefer #11's
The 10's are too tight and sometimes need 2 hammer strikes to fire! Not good!
I just pinch the #11's and press them on innally with a small wooden dowel The pinch usually holds but the stick is double insurance Rarely does one fall off from recoil.
Remingtons are nice pliable metal and hold their shape well, RWS are too soft, CCI's are too hard metal and often fragment into the actionof Colt Clones.
Remington priming compound ALWAYS fires!
I have found that the Colt design is prone to jaqms fragments caught under the hammer, and pieces falling between the frame and cylinder. The Remington design only has a few problems, mostly tighy tolerances that require quick clean-ups on the cylinder arbor,
Crisco seems to alleviate many Remington problems but, elts off on the first couple shots leaving a possible arc-over space for chainfires, I prefer to seal the xylinder with cloth (soaked) revolver wads. they give the barrel a quick wipe too
Cap availabity has been impossible lately

1 I finally found some and bought 6 tins so I have some on hand. I also bought 2# of Pyrodex just in case.Who knows what Obama and his Anti's will do next?
I can't believe how hard it must've been in the old days, trying to keep your revolver running!
BTW, great section here, lots of info!

I still need to stock up on balls and wads.

Be careful using toy caps...they go off a lot easier than normal caps.
Had one go off while capping a chamber not aligned with the barrel...not a pleasant experience, nobody got hurt but they could have been.

# 11 s

I found that by putting a scant drop of alcohol (I'm using 190 proof) into the plastic caps the charge turns into a gel that can be removed with a nut pick and added to a cap already containing a charge thereby doubling it, and tripling if necessary. After adding extra charge work the double charge to the bottom of the cap by keeping it moist with alcohol as you work it. let them dry over night min. before using. This also eliminates paper making cleaning less of a hassle.

Around here I was able to find a supply of #11s at a gun show. I didn't buy any because I use #10s, which I couldn't find for the life of me!

The charge does go off in the caps or rolls if using metal tools on dry caps were but no problem for me when I wet with a scant drop of alcohol first.

I wonder how long folks are going to blame Obama for all the wrongs brought on by the last ....oh.....several white administrations. Seriously folks, start doin your own research and stop listening to the idiots that want to keep the rich rich, and the poor their oppressed slave labor force.

I haven't gotten any fffg yet, but I'm off to see the wizard today so I can test the new cap loads. I got five out of six to go off using pyrodex and hope the fffg will get me to 100%. This is my only option for self protection since I got drunk and into trouble a year out of high school in "75". I take not having an equalizer very seriously with things going the way they are in this country and around the world.

I just have one tin each of #10 &#11. I'd like to get two or three more. I'm not actively looking but will pick them up when I see them

i gave up looking last year, keeping myself busy with other things... i have 200 #11 caps thats it, locally to me everything else can be found 'cept the caps.
In june ill hit friendship see if i have any luck there>

I ended up tripling the loads in the toy caps and got ignition but there was a lag between cap going and then the charge. Not as much as flintlock but a lag that could be crucial. Glad I found the CCIs.

No shortage of #11 or #10 caps in SW Ohio. Was at LGS yesterday and rack was full. Along with everything else

That place got everything you need for black powder and then some. Great place to shop, I love seeing all those Vincent rifles he has in the back of his shop. In my opinion the J. & S. Hawken rifle has nothing over a John & Caleb Vincent rifle.

OK. All this talk about toy caps jolted a dim pocket of my brain. I have read in the past year that toy caps contain corrosive elements. If you use these be sure to remove the nipples and clean the cylinder and hammer well of you may have a rusty area there in a short while.

PS: Black powder is the real stuff. It is vastly superior to subs when everything is taken into consideration. You are cheating yourself if you are using Pyrodex, etc.
