OLDer 1100 20 gauge with one each fixed Skeet, Improved Cylinder, and Modified barrel. Respective barrel lengths : 26", 26", and 28".

I loaded one 2 3/4" Brenneke' slug, and from the word "yeah" I mounted gun to face from low gun and nailed the Ace of Spades at 12 steps.

Thank you for reading.

Steve

Git your butt back in here!

You want something? :D

Lady [strike] stole [/strike] bought this gun right. It cost her a steak dinner and homemade brownies.
Grandpa's gun, and this granddaughter put on the charm and worked him over good.
Grandpa seemed to have enjoyed all this btw. :p

Actually Grandma's gun to be technical. Grandpa just got to shoot it when Grandma let him.

They both shot skeet, bird hunted, small game hunted, deer hunted with this gun.
It also stayed loaded for serious situation duty, and once the fellows that escaped from Prison, stayed "right there" until Sheriff and Prison folks showed up to offer these gentleman a ride to the Graybar Hotel.

It also come with an extra stock, Grandpa bought for some reason, he said he forgot why. "I think I just thought "why not?" and figured it would not hurt to have an extra stock".

Gun runs, always had. It has won skeet and 5 stand tourney's in their classes.

So Granddaughter and the other ladies have been shooting this gun a lot.
Pattern board work, Grandpa's old recipes, new shells and what not.

I had no idea what barrel I was shooting when I shot the Brenneke, it was later I was told "IC".
That set of fixed choked barrels, all shoot super patterns!
[I told them they would]
It does the same with #3 buckshot and slugs...oh dear me, this gun shoot slugs like you would not believe!
With any of the 3 barrels.

More than likely, she will just keep the fixed IC barrel on it all the time, as It will be used for serious use for home/property.
This one has a bit more "character" than the other two barrels.

She does not know it yet, there is a Full and 3 more of the fixed barrels she has already.
My idea for grandpa to get some more homemade dinners and desserts by stretching this "working grandpa out of stuff". :)

Bone stock - with extra trigger group, recoil spring, factory butt pads and other parts.
Except.
The gun does have Pacmayer Decelarator recoil pad(s) as Grandparents liked the way it mounted to face from low gun better with these pads and "looks real nice".
Mid beads on all barrels.

Grandpa figures this gun has about 100k rounds through it. Never messed up, always run, still running.

Four months ago this granddaughter could not hit the inside of a 55 gal drum standing in it.
Just never got into shotguns.
So, we assisted her.

She shot her first straight [25/25] and Grandpa darn near missed shooting her hat with his chest all puffed out. :p

Then she was just out "piddling" using up some shells reloaded about 3 times too many times already and run 115 straight, she run out of shells.

Grandpa asked if she wanted to keep going, he would find more shells.
Folks volunteered shells.

"Nope, thank you though. I'm good"
- she said about 3 feet off the ground and doing a really poor job of hiding excitement.

We nailed that hat of hers but good!

Poor Girl, grandpa said she would have to put up with him , by going with to Europe with him this summer to get "considered" for the 12, 28, and .410 matching guns.
He is footing the whole bit...she is the only grandkid.

"I can fake it, I can *sigh* suffer through this if I have to" - she said.
Neither one of them can lie worth a flip.

:D

I loaded one 2 3/4" Brenneke' slug

Any recoil issues with that? I just started doing patterns on a 20 ga. 1100 but haven't gotten around to slugs yet.

BTW, great post. Everyone needs grandpas like that.

Steve, you brightened my day. Thanks.

Thanks for posting that,Steve. A couple things....

Not many folks these days know that every now and then a fixed choke barrel will work exceptionally well with a given slug. Not all slugs, but one.

One High Standard pump, unloved by me otherwise, with a Mod barrel shot Rottweil 2 3/4" Brenekkes into a ragged hole at 50 yards, shooting to POA with the beads stacked. Some deer found this out the hard way.

BTW, there's 12 gauge slugs out there not as effective,IME, as that 20 gauge Brenekke.

Old 1100s are excellent shooters. New rings and springs extend working life greatly.

And if there's a better starter shotgun than a LW 20 I'd really like to hear about it...

Speaking of 20 gauge 1100s...

Did/does Remington make a youth-sized 1100 in 20 gauge? I ask because my Dad has two 1100s, both in 20 gauge. One of the guns appears to be youth-sized. The butt stock is about 1.5 inches shorter than the other model. The barrel is also shorter; I'd guesstimate 18 to 19 inches. I didn't measure it when I had the chance.

Those are nice, light shotguns. My Dad said he is willing to part with one, so maybe I can get one. I'm leaning towards the short-stocked one so that my wife can shoot it as well. Any thoughts on how the short LOP will work on me? I'm 5'11".

Fly320s,
LOP will vary with sleeve length, neck size and other factors.
Guessing, you would probably be "fit" with a 14" LOP.

Your wife, not knowing her size, guessing, I am going to say 12 1/2" - 12 3/4" LOP

Only concern I have with the "short barrel" you mentioned is, Dwell time can affect the running of the gun.
So I am hoping what you saw was a factory 23" Bird Gun Barrel, which is a best kept secret for not only birds, also more serious use.

Ports and all are factory [read: not monkey-ed with] and these guns flat run!!

Is this stock English /Straight Stocked? If so [strike] steal it [/strike] snag that one. :)

Shorter than 23" is where folks mess up. Ports are opened up, and usually to fit only one or two loadings.
This is why one is wise to question, and be suspicious of gamers getting rid of a gun , and they really want to get rid of it.

Oh yeah, a bone stock 23" barrel 20 ga 1100 Bird Gun is one heck of a gamer gun.
How well I know...

Since I shared this with the lady and grandpa...

1100 20 ga Bird Guns with factory 23" barrels - playing games before 3 Gun came to be what it is:

Where is Steve?
"Just look for the only two shooters not using a black 12 bore gun, Steve is wearing a green rubber band on his pony tail, and the gal is wearing a red rubber band...and she is better on the eyes and has parts...can't miss 'em".

Them idiots are shooting from the bed of a moving pick-up truck! Why??

"Beats running your butt off don't it?
All that was said was , was for shooters to make it down that "alley" as fast as could and make fast hits.
Just made sense to them two to haul butt down the alley in a truck and shoot. Nobody else thought of it, and nobody has that fast of a time yet either".

:)

Needless to say, we kicked butt and took names on that stage, we had practiced doing this a lot.

When I share a bone stock shotgun will do some things, I *may* have some experiences and observations to back it up.

"So what did you two do to these shotguns to compete with them?"

"Other than practice, and load them - nothing.
Oh, we did put the slings on them ..."
