need opinons on a hd shotgun i,m looking at a rem870 nickel or a mossy 590a1 both nickel and parkerized whats the pro,s and con,s two each ?

Mossbergs, especially today, are more reliable and have better ergonomics, plus, they are underpriced for what they are in my opinion.

870's? They are robbing people with inferior products based on an OK history -- even the Remington Pres. says their strong point is not the action but... "their pointability." Huh!?

Ford-Chevy. Get the one that fits/feels best and learn it.

Good defensive shotguns are way more common than good defensive shotgunners.

Become a good Shotgunner instead of just being some guy with a shotgun.

Al, back it up. Provide evidence that new 870s are junk instead of just saying so. You may want to check out a recent thread I started over on our other great BB, The Firing Line.

The thread is titled "A Challenge to the 870 Bashers". In it I offered to buy or fix every messed up 870 presented to me at my range of choice. After 5K views and a dozen pages of input vs rhetoric from a handful of bashers, no takers.

In fact, once a handful of rather vocal and unhappy folks got out of there, all input was positive.

And after handling and shooting at least 20 newer Expresses in the last year(Heck I did three last weekend) without any functional difficulties, l do not expect to buy or fix any.

OTOH, if you feel you've been stuck with a worthless 870 of any vintage, bring it by and I'll buy it for $150, about what you'll get in a trade at a shop. If it's rusted and abused, or you'd rather ship it to my FFL (Clyde's Gun Shop,410-242-6108), $100.

The ball's in your court......

I had the opportunity to handle (not shoot) a 590 HD configured with ghost ring sights this past Friday in a small local shop.

It had a $459 price tag on it, which I considered high. The thing I noticed the most about it was, it seemed really heavy for a HD setup, and the LOP was about a 1/2 inch too long for me.

Other than that, I liked it. But I think I'm going to stick with my 870.

Dave, If you get overun with inferior 870's I'll take a few off your hands. :D

Both good guns, handle each and decide which best fits you for ergonomics, especially the safety location, then buy it.

Next week you'll be back and braggin about it to no end no matter which one you get.

I agree with Dave McCracken. I've read about the 870 issues but I've never experienced them or personally met anyone who has. Not to say they don't exist, but read Daves post again for my views on it.

Hello friends and neighbors // I have had both and now own 870s

Remington has made a great shotgun IMHO since the model 31 (mine is from Aug. 1945)

When the cheaper to build 870 took the 31s place everyone was poised for it to fail but in 13 years the 870 pushed out even the mighty Winchester model 12. This forced another cheaper to build model the Winchester model 1200.

Mossberg 500s were created to compete with this class of shotgun (Winchester 1200), not the Winchester model 12, which the 870 Wingmaster replaced and certainly not the Remington model 31, which was too well made to compete with the "cheaper" Win. model 12.

To go further the 870 Express line (great 870 just less finished) was created to compete with the "cheaper" Mossbergs.
So IMHO even if you are to compare Mossbergs to only the 870 Expresses I's still go 870. If you are talking Wingmaster or Police 870 hands down.

I definately do not take/make the opportunity to shoot my shotguns as much as some here, but have had two Mossbergs (gone now),
Remington 870 Wingmasters-
1960 12ga.,,1960 20ga.-----1976 12ga. all functioning fine;;;;;

870 Express Magnum 1993 20.ga
870 Express Tactical with Ghost Ring sights, 2009 12ga.

No problems so far.
I do buy used only after working up a good price or new when there are rebate opportunities and am obviously a satisfied customer. I also have Winchester, H&R and Stevens models and prefer the 870.

The nickle would be too reflective IMHO for a HD shotgun.
I have an 18 3/4" barrel for my blued 1976 870 WM and my Express Tac. is 18 1/2" parkerised black with black synthetic stock and forearm.. I've been shooting the 76 WM so long it is hard to transfer to the 2009 Express but I'm trying, mostly because of the 3" capability.

@ Dave McCraken --- if you end up with too many $150.00 870s PM me I'd love to find some for around $200.00. They are getting rare around here in any flavor.

I currently own Mossbergs and 870s. I like both brands just fine.

If you are going to pick one and go with it, to me it comes down to a matter of ergonomics. The biggest difference is the location of the safety. The Mossberg's safety is considered ambidextrous - and is located on the top of the receiver. You push it forward to fire. The 870 safety is built into the trigger group - and on a right hand model, would be switched to "fire" by the trigger finger.

Bottom line, go to the gun store and handle them both. Reliabilty has never been an issue for either of them for me (and reliability is king for home defense).

Sorry, guys, if I get any nasty ol' 870s they will stay rat cheer. I may cut down the stock on one, install a decellerator and use it for teaching kids.

Cerro coating it pink and adding Hello Kitty stickers may be an option.

Back on topic.

Were I a new shooter looking for a GP/HD shotgun, either the 500 or 870 would be my choice. Fit and ergos would direct that choice.

The one well worn 500 I have owned did everything I asked of it. I only sold it because I wanted consistent controls on all the shotguns I used and 870s were not only in my closet but my duty shotgun.

And, I'd look for a used example. Neither wears out under usual use, so best to save a little money and get one pre slicked.
