So, for the fun of it, while reloading once fired 2.75 " Win AAs, I threw a caliper on some commercial Win AA shells and got lengths from 2.68 to 2.82".

That interested me because my MEC 600 Jr. came set for 2-3/4 shells and loaded Rem STS and Win AA fine. T

hen, because I had some, I loaded Cheddite hulls and had to adjust the length to get the crimp right without crushing the side walls. Pain in the butt.

Resetting for my normal Win AA hulls I began to wonder what leeway I had in length. I load for a Remington 1100 (non-magnum) that only feeds 2-3/4 inch shells.

What insight can shotshell reloaders give me? How tight should I reload? Should the caliper be on the highest point of the shell?

It would seem that length for a shotshell doesn’t matter much so long as it reliably feeds and ejects.

Shot shell trim length

http://www.saami.org/PubResources/CC_Drawings/Shotshell/12-gauge%202_3-4.pdf I have never trimmed any. Looks like the forcing cone handles any excess length?? Search here maybe > http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/index.php When changing brands of hull, i always have to adjust the Mec 600 jr. The taper applied to the loaded shell is very important for reliable feeding in pumps or autos. Put a mic on factory new shells to see the taper (WW) On old , dont now about the new WW.
