I already have an 870 express that has a 3 inch chamber which originally had a rifled barrel, but somehow someone has completely destroyed the inside so I would have to buy a new barrel for around $240. The other option was to get a mossberg slugster for $300 which has a 3.5 inch chamber. Which would be the better choice.

Man its the craziest thing it was supposed to be used in dog hunting tests with only blanks but somehow the first 8 or 9 inches of the barrel have deep cuts all the way around about three times as deep as the rifling. I suspect someone shot shot through it but i still don't see how that could do that.

Get the new barrel. You'll quickly find you don't want to use 3.5" shells for deer. Not that you will need them in any case.

It just depends. Are you married?? For all us married guys know that the new barrel is easier to hide, and thus gets us in less to no trouble. But then again, if you are going to spend $240 for a barrel, why not go ahead and buy the new one for $60 more.

I say just get them both and cover both sides. That's what I normally do.

I can only tell you have owned a Mossberg 500 with scoped rifled slug barrel since the 80's an it is slightly heavier than my buddy's Remington, but I get great grouping with the cheapest Winchester 2 3/4 slugs. Very reliable.

I've owned three Mossy slugsters, with the rifle barrel sights. Apart from the sights sometimes flipping down in recoil they were excellent and surprisingly accurate. They do recoil a wee bit with the brenneke magnums, though ;-) Just a wee bit. May want to have your dental insurance up to date in case your fillings hop out of your mouth.

Yeah I'm not too worried about the recoil. I will probably go ahead and get the mossberg since I've got a different barrel for the 870.
