I took my daughter to the range today to see if she would like it. I first went over gun safety and the controls of the 1911. We then started at about 10 yards and she is a natural. She hit the shoot n see target every time. We saved the first target with her first magazine. The ciener 15 round mag was emptied and 15 holes are in the target! Many of the holes are surrounding the little red circle in the middle. We stayed and shot for 2 hours and she loved it(thank God!). I finally have a dependable shooting buddy. I hope that I have created a monster!!!lol

My 14yr old son never wants to go. I think I started him off to early with a CZ 75b in 40 cal and scared him off.

It wouldn't happen in my household, wife would string me up by my "huevos". Certainly not a criticism of your own personal decision, but twelve yrs of age would be more of a .22 rifle rather than a handgun...:)

Congrats on the little Anne oakley you got.
If you ever get your son to go again give him a good .22 and use pop cans as a target.
My dad let me fire my first shots through a Nylon 66 when I was four. Did'nt hit anything but I was hooked from then on.I fired an sks when I was six,and old Spanish mauser in .308 when I was eight, and an m1 Garand when I was nine. But recoil and noise has never been a problem for me. But not everyone the same and your son may just not like being pounded half to death. Get him hooked with a 22 and then ease him into the bigger stuff.

Any chance you might have*

Congrats on your daughter.. we talking 45cal 1911?

And, yep, first impressions can be lasting (for awhile) especially the 40cal.

*Next time, try a 22lr or 9mm.. IMHO

Excellent!
I love taking kids shooting. They don't have any bad habits to unlearn. :)
I generally start 'em off with a .22 revolver.
I don't own any long guns w/ short stocks, and if they can't hold it right, they aren't gonna have any fun.

Sorry, I thought I mentioned the ciener 22 lr conversion. My daughter shot the conversion today. My wife has been with me several times to the range, but she is not a very good shot. My son hunts with me(birds) and he loves his mossberg 20 guage. I just think I turned him off of handguns. My daughter started on a pellet gun and has moved up to the 1911 22lr conversion. Maybe she'll soon want to try her hand at a bowling pin match.

Yep my little lady likes the .45 the most of all. 9mm? Not enough challenge, she absolutely loves to plink with the mosin... but holding it up is a chore for her slight frame. Oh well. good luck

Good for you steelyblue!!! The more shooters we have the better the chances are we can protect our 2nd Amendment rights.

igpoobah,
Great pictures of your daughter... She looks like she is having a lot of fun.

I'm very lucky, my youngest son loves to shoot as much as I do and is at the range with me more often than not. (he's 20 now)

Great to hear, it's good to get kids into shooting, and gun safety!:) I started my son out at 8yrs old, with a .22, and he now shoots everything that I shoot.
