So I live in the PRK (People's Republic of California).

On the desk of the Governator is a bill that will make online purchasing of ammo
illegal for CA residents. :banghead:

So I'm going to stock up.

My shotgun is mainly for self defense
(it's a 12 ga. CZ 712 20" barrel). I just got it and haven't had time to pattern it
or to really see what it likes, unfortunately. I think the bill has to be signed or
vetoed soon (around 10 days I believe).

I don't have a problem finding lots of reviews and info on buckshot.
But I'm having trouble with slugs.

So, basically what are some good 12ga smooth bore slugs that are a good value?

I like the Federal Tru-Ball and LE rifled slugs, Federal Vital-Shok, Winchester Super-X, Remington Slugger, all 2 3/4" regulars and have had good results in a Mossberg 590 at 25 yards with them shooting offhand making a fist-sized group is about right for all of em.

And I thought Maryland was bad.

If your in a bind, Brenekke, Brenekke, Brenekke. I dont shoot them but everyone to tries them seems to swear by them-

I bought a bunch of rifled slugs for my 12 ga Mossberg pump and my single shot H&R 20 ga (my first gun).

I bought them without knowing you need a special barrel to be able to shoot them...I'm still trying to figure it out.

For now, the slugs are separated from my regular ammo so that I won't use them in a pinch.

I would love to hear the skinny on slugs and slug guns.

Unless you bought a Shotgun with an "Overbored" barrel you can shoot rifled slugs in it without issue. Choke restriction sometimes affects accuracy, but you can even shoot rifled slugs through a full choke. The lead is malleable enough to not cause barrel damage. Special slug barrels are to enhance the accuracy, or may be rifled to accomodate sabots, but are not absolutely required. Just never shoot them in an overbored barrel. As I had it explained to me, the possibility of blowing out the base of the slug and leaving a barrel restriction for the next shot, exists. Generally, the loose choke restrictions or cylinder bore barrels are more accurate. As to the op's question, for me, Breneke.

Brenneke KOs, the non-sabot flavor. Should be reasonably inexpensive in quantity. And they've worked well in every smoothbore I've ever tried them in.

The 12ga has a variable choke on the end. The 20ga is a full choke.

Thanks for the info. I'll do some reading on it just to make sure...the potential consequences are high enough to justify getting something in writing on this one! :) Man there is a bunch of conflicting info on the web! I'lltry to focus on the manufacturer info.

Anybody in California that's involved in any way with firearms, guns, hunting, shooting whatever needs to get off their dead butt and call the governor, e-mail the governor, usps letter the governor!

While folks are busy stocking up on ammo the whole future goes down the tubes if he doesn't VETO the proposed law, passed by the mindless self-serving politicos.

Better yet, encourage family, friends, anybody at all to do the same in IMMEDIATELY contacting the governor to help with a huge public outcry!

This is serious, the real thing, not to be ignored for personal comforts.

It's just this type of laws that shoved California into the stinking rathole it's in now. The reason the gun grabber sickos get their way most of the time is because the average gun owner gives it a big ho-hum, what's on the TV?

I've personally contacted the governor and explained to him the catastrophic financial impact of this on the State of California in lost TAX REVENUES.

It also saddles all ammunition sellers with huge expenses and business hassles to comply with new regs, doubtless causing many more to finally lock the doors, shouting ENOUGH! That's lost TAX REVENUE.

It impacts every single aspect of the gun sport and gun possession and gun use in the entire state, forcing how many more thousands of citizens to finally pack up a U-Haul and call it quits on the 'Golden State'?? That's lost TAX REVENUE.

It has a huge impact on all of the recreation associated with guns, hunting, sport use, etc. which happens to be in the large millions upon millions in TAX REVENUE.

Use your imagination, figure out the many ways it will rob the state's TAX REVENUES and communicate this to the governor. LOST TAX REVENUE, that speaks to the heart of politicians!

Instead of rushing to stock up, dedicate a week or however much time is left to spreading the word, encouraging others, and personally writing letters & making phone calls. This MUST be stopped with the governor's VETO!

DO YOUR PART!

fryerpower:

When you say "variable choke", are you refering to swappable choke tubes, or the "Poly-Choke" or "C-Lect" type of 'twist-to-set-choke-amount' device?

If it is the twist-to-adjust, try improved cylinder or modified settings...or if you have swappable tubes, same choices Imp-Cyl to Mod will MOST LIKELY give you good results with both slugs & buckshot....Note though, that Your Mileage Will Vary...every barrel/choke/ammo combination is a law unto itself.

well, I use remington sluggers and they work for me out of a winchester 1300. I use them on feral hogs and the such. I also use federal cheapies whatever there called out of my 20 gauge H&R single and they work really good.

Spirit 1,

Thank you for outlining some reasons centered around TAX REVENUE. That's really the only language the politicos understand ultimately. I'm going to contact the governor, but I wasn't too motivated until now because I wasn't confident in my approach. The approach you mentioned about TAX REVENUE makes sense. I'm going to have to plagiarize some of your points.

Have you posted in the Activism forum? More folks who will take action are likely to be in there. A post that shows a draft letter, a mailing address, phone numbers, etc., would be good. If you haven't done it yet, I can give it a shot. Let me know. We can post in a forums where we're members.

IIRC, it has a split barrel tip that you tighten a threaded cylinder down around. The farther you tighten it, the closer the tips comer together, giving you a tighter choke. It is a 1960's gun.

Thanks for the link - from what I read, it was concerned with handgun ammunition (NOT saying that that is a good thing), but failing to see the connection to shotgun ammunition and the resultant panic buying that might ensue from the OP post

AB962 is a big deal but yes I don't think it affects long gun ammunition. I could be wrong. Hopefully it will get vetoed like it did last time...

I don't see what the point of stocking up in advance of 962 is unless you're really saving that much money by buying online. There's some stuff you just can't get locally but I've yet to see Walmart be out of 12ga.

Well, I wish I had stocked up on WWB .40 cal ammo from Walmart not too many months ago. Now, this ammo is nowhere on the shelves. If it is there, then the price is ridiculously high. This happened practically overnight.

Ha! It is only handgun ammo. I think I read that thing a few times and my brain filtered that out!

Hmmm. So I guess I'll be getting some more handgun ammo soon.

But regardless, I appreciate the info. on the slugs. It seems Brenekke is the way to go.
I read some other reviews and people seem to love those slugs.

I have a Ted Williams Model 300 like that. You should be able to shoot slugs without issue. Especially on the more open settings such as I/C and CYL.
