One shot kills on bears with a small caliber pistol rounds like the 9mm are "one in a million". I remember reading somewhere about a polar bear being stopped by a 38spl wadcutter when it attack a person. The round luckily struck both of the lungs and heart.

12 7mm slugs!!! holy crap. is there a picture of this prime example of Natures Perfect Killing machine?!

Apparently you don't quite understand how it works. Bears are primarily herbivores but are more correctly called omnivores...like people. The fact that the bear might have been tough is another matter. There are many tough animals that are not considered killing machines.

Now, if you want to talk polar bear, they don't get a lot of vegetation to feed on and so their diet is almost all flesh.

I happen to know Ted Winnen. He has gotten more crap over shooting that bear than anyone deserves in an entire lifetime.

Although he was glad to luck into such a nice specimen, totally fed up with the bovine feces that has come as a result.

The real kicker is this email group is for federal employees to keep them up to date on issues. It never seemed as a place where urban legends would propagate. That's what sucked me in.
I work at a large defense contractor--the IT department sent out an urban legend awhile back...

No one is immune!

Erich, you want as many degrees of separation as possible between you and a gargantuan bear. The more the better. Trust me :)

Yeah, I read what www.Snopes.com said about it. The true vervion of the story is even more exciting than the mythical one, in my opinion. A big bruin, nonetheless...

p.s. I'm looking for work anywhere in the Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine area -- will move there as soon as I find it. Any help?? Thanks in advance.
