I am loading these for feral hogs in dense LA thickets using 48 g of IMR 4064 at about 2695 fps. i think that this Hornady bullet is designed for 30-30.

would the speer # 2017 Hot Cor or sierra pro hunter RN 2135 be a better choice?

would another bullet in 150g be a better choice?

your sugestions are welcomed.

i am shooting these in a Rem 760 with 3x9 scope.

I can't comment on the Hornady but any 150 grain 30 caliber bullet that Speer makes will work great on hogs, including their #2017. For a quick kill on a hog shoot them on the point of the shoulder so the bullet goes through the shoulder bones and they will drop where they stand. If you shoot them through the lungs the bullet will go through like a knife through hot butter and they will run several yards before they fall. I have seen fat come out the exit bullet hole on a lung shot and seal the wound so it doesn't bleed. It amazes me that when you shoot a hog with a 30-06 you can't hear the bullet impact. 48 grains of IMR 4064 should be a great load for your Rem 760. If I were using that load in cold weather I would use a magnum primer.

180 gr?

Hi,

have you considered the 180 gr sprn hot cor? its a bit longer... better sd. a bit heavier and you can load it up to a similar velocity.

the issue with bullets designed for 30/30 is that the velocity required for expansion is lower so at 30-06 speeds it may be that they fragment and dont get the penetration you need.

I like the hot core bonded bullets. their terminal performance has always been second to none

... interlock

If you want to stick with a 150gr bullet I would suggest either the 150gr Hornady Interlock or 150gr Interbond. Both bullets are tough enough to handle the tough skin and the plate common on Hogs yet they don't cost a lot. Similar bullets from other companies will be good too of course especially since components are hard to find.

I'm a fan of slightly heavier bullets in the 30-06 so I would probably load a 165gr bullet over the 150gr bullet as I do for Deer. A little extra energy won't hurt on a hog hunt.

Don't forget, we need pictures!!!

interlocks...

my favourite bullet. I load 165 interlocks in my 30-06. i use them for everything. If i got onto some boar shooting i would use them for that with no hesitation. i use N140. it is a bit faster burning than would give top velocity... but it gives really good accuracy and i also load for my 7mm08. with n140 i can do both.
