Hey all,
I recently received a old(er) 16 gauge that belong to my mom. It is a single shot break open. (a High Standard I believe) I would like to try it on trap. Does anyone else use a 16 for trap anymore and if so what shot shells?
Thanks

7/8, or 1oz #7 1/2 or #8 shot.

Whatever you can find.

Not a whole lot to select from in 16 ga.

Reloading is where the 16 can really shine, otherwise you are really limited unless you buy on line and buys by the flat. Check RST and Polywad for some loads, as well as Kemen and Rio

I have an 870 Wingmaster in 16 Ga (modified choke) that I use for trap. I have found the best place to by #8 loads are from Natchezss.com, the Rio brand. #9 loads are non existent. I have run the reloading cost calculator and found the savings to be minimal. I found the savings to be about $1.50 to $0.75 a box, using 7/8 oz loads.

I have heard that the 16 ga is still very popular in southwest Louisiana for duck hunting, and that the Wal Marts in that area have a good selection.

Thanks guys. I found some 16 ga thru ammoengine. Apparently in stock at Bass Pro shop. There is a store a few miles from here but I will call ahead to make sure. I will update the experience in a week or so.

ps my mistake- The gun is a Savage 220

If you think you might be getting into the world of 16ga then stop over to the 16 Gauge Society. There is a link section to 16ga ammo manufacturers. I still find 16ga at the local wally world, gander mountain, bass pro and cabela's. It is mostly No 7.5 or 8 remington game loads which should work fine.

Good info, thanks. I found 16 ga at local Meijers (Mich based store) for 7.50ish and at Duhnams for 7 bucks.

Howdy

I'm going to be the naysayer. The first shotgun I ever owned was also a 16 gauge, an old Stevens 311 SXS. I picked it up for a song when I was in college.

If you want to shoot a little bit of Trap with your 16 gauge, that is fine. But if you start to get serious about it you will find that a free shotgun starts being pretty expensive because 16 gauge shells are hard to find. Most of the 16 gauge shells you will probably find are game loads, which are a little bit hot for Trap. If you want to reload, 16 gauge hulls are much harder to find than 20 gauge or 12 gauge. Same with wads.

By all means, shoot a few boxes, but if you get serious, you will be much better off finding an inexpensive 12 gauge, because you can find 12 gauge trap loads just about anywhere.
