Just picked up some 160 gr. LC in lead and wanted to load them for .45 ACP- currently have Win 231 in the powder drop.... anyone loaded this with success? One of my favorite light plinking loads is 185 fp lead with 5.1 W231, but I have not been able to locate the 185 locally and thought this might be worth a try. Suggestions?

I've never loaded 160's for 45ACP myself. You may be able to use published data for 185gr lead and work your way up. I would check the bullet length so that you make sure that you have enough bullet seated into the case to secure it during cycling of the action. You may have to shorten the COL accordingly. A taper crimp die would help as well. That's about all I know to suggest.

Why?

Not to be a smart a** - but because maybe I can? Seriously, I had a box of the 185's stuck in the back of my bullet shelf loaded with 5.1 W231- actually had forgotten they were there. But a buddy of mine was looking for a comfortable load for his wife to try in 45ACP- when I saw them I remembered them being pretty tame and she wound up liking them a lot. Our lead cast bullet supplier that most of the retailers used around here is temporarily shut down, and the supply of most of the popular sizes has dried up. I saw those and decided to give it a try- kind of an impulse buy you might say. So there is the convaluted reason.... now I just gotta try and figure out how to make them work!

I'll check the Alliant powder site and see what I can come up with...thanks for the suggestions guys..

bsam4me,

The latest Lee manual lists loads for 154, 155, & 170 gr. bullets in 45 ACP. However, W231 is not listed for those bullet weights.

Bob

p.s. Is/was the supplier Rucker? Good stuff.
