Hey guys,

I got a squib at 5.4 gr W231 in my 5'' 1911.

I was wondering what how much powder and your OAL for the 185 gr XTP in your 45 ACP. with Win 231

-This will be a "Carry" Round, so it needs a little UMPF ;)

I got 1000 of these with my press so looks like i have some work to do.

Also do you factory crimp yours?

What does your manual say? If you used the Hornady manual you already know you are below the minimum starting load by 10%.

Cartridge: 45 ACP
Load Type: Pistol

Starting Loads - 5.0 gr

Maximum Loads - 5.9 gr

1.135 OAL

-------

i just wanted to know what others find to be a good load with this bullet and powder combo

I don't think 5.4 gr of W231 will cause a squib in any barrel. Probably more like no powder and primer ignition only.

I don't load that bullet, but used W231/HP-38 for 185 gr Remington Golden Saber JHP and Berry's HBRN with good results for target shooting.

Lyman #49 lists 4.4-6.1 gr for Hornady 185 gr JHP/XTP at 1.175" OAL and Hodgdon load data lists 5.0-5.9 gr for Hornady 185 gr JSWC at 1.135" OAL.

For full power SD/HD loads, I have been using WSF.

I normally taper crimp jacketed .451" diameter bullets to .470". I don't use FCD.

+1

Whatever caused the squib for sure wasn't the powder charge or the OAL.

I'd say you forgot to put the powder in it!
Might want to review your charging & checking methods

Hornady's recipe for its 185JHP using W231 is a starting load of 5.9 to a max of 7.2. OAL is 1.230. I've used 6.4 in my 5'' government with good results.

jcerillo70...are you using Hodgdon's recipe for a 185gr JSWC instead of a recipe for a 185 XTP? While it is true one can use similar recipes for similar bullets, the profile of the XTP as compared to the JSWC makes for a big difference in OAL.

I too doubt that even tho your load was light, that seating your bullet almost .1 deeper than called for should have raised pressure enough that a squib was not caused by the light charge. I would suspect a case with no powder. How did the other rounds shoot?

^^ yep what buck460 said, I have (from Hornady) for the 185grn XTP 5.9 start-7.2 max c.o.l. 1.230. Speer gives a similiar weight for their 185 Gold dot (6.6-7.4)

Hornady's 8th Edition calls for start: 6.4g W231 @ 850FPS, 5" Colt Barrel,
Max: 7.2g W231 @ 950FPS, 5" Colt Barrel, C.O.L. 1.225"

Are you guys using an older edition, must be the difference...

With my 500 free bullets with my LNL AP I went with 6.9 w231 and it's deadly accurate. Decent amount of recoil though but that's to be expected
