165gr missouri bullets 30-30

I've reloaded a small batch of Missouri 165gr whitetails. I loaded them on top of 16.5gr of imr 4227 fed 210m primers and fc brass. I haven't shot cast bullets out of 30-30 yet but i figured 4227 was a good start as i have been told it is the "go to" for cast. Now the problem is, i have a hell of a time to keep them in a 5 inch group at just 35 yards! at first i thought i was having a bad day of offhand, but when i benched it, the groups didn't change. now i know i can shrink the groups up with changing my loads, but I've never had that large of a group to start especially with a suggested load out of the lyman book. has anyone else experienced this with the Missouri cast bullets in 30-30?

I shot some out of my marlin microgrove barrel and they tumbled badly. I later found out that they needed to be a little larger, but I did not pursue the matter.

thats what they seem to be doing to me. im sorry but what do you mean by larger?

To get good results, cast bullets need to be sized properly for your individual bore. Go to castboolits.com for a proper education on the subject.

Also, if it's a micro groove Marlin, you need more help them I can give you. A few people can make them SHOOT with cast, and swear by them. Most people just swear at them.

no its a winchester, but ive had plenty of experiance with cast in marlins, just not rifle cast, more of .44 mag and .41 mag. i thought it wouldnt be a problem....wrong. thanks for the ref. ill have to check them out.

Reduce the load. I got decent shooting from 14 gr IMR 4227 and a 170 gr bulk cast .30-30.
A friend won some CAS side matches with it.

Just got done loading that same boolit for a 30-30 winny over the last few months and had the same results as you. And leading to boot. REDUCE THE LOAD. Its a PB boolit and regardless that its listed as "BHN 18" , its just not going to work at that velocity. Both the PB 135s & 165s, at least for me and my winny, worked well when i kept the velocities in the 100-1200 range. That Lyman 170 load your referencing specifies gas checked boolit.
Keep whackin away at it. i shoot NOTHING but cast in 30-30 and its a blast. With some guidance & experimentation, have even shot cast with checks up to 1,800 fps with 1-2" grps.Do a search for "Musial" and his loads/data , learn, and enjoy.
