Pet Cast Loads in 30-30 And 45-70?

I worked up a substitute H335 load for my M1 Garand, nothing super duper, just a plinking load... H335 gave me a basketball sized fireball! I'm still working with it in .308, for my M1a, as an 'as needed' substitute for IMR3031, but with the muzzle brake on a 16" barrel, I hope I never have to switch to it! o_O

My pet load for my AR10 is a 155gr HPBT over 42.4gr of H335. It has large muzzle brake on the end of it’s 20” barrel. Very loud and concussive, but no huge flash.

It makes about a 12” diameter fireball from my 30-30 as well. I had someone else point it out. I was running near a max charge and between recoil and trying to hold steady for testing I missed it.

I have seen one load for the 45/70 that shoots a 405gr cast lead bullet at just under 1100 fps. It calls for 15gr of Unique powder. I haven't tried it in mine so use at your own risk.

You might want to check that load... the standard load with a 405grn cast is 15grn Unique.

I have QuickLoad data for a cast 385grn bullet, 15grn Unique is right at 25K psi, with an estimated velocity of 1343fps. That load, in my 32" Pedersoli is right at 1300fps... so I think the numbers are pretty close. Add the additional weight of a 405grn bullet...

Thank you for the update. I stand corrected. I've since edited my last message to 15gr. A good handloader can't have too many load manuals. When you go into unkown territory you should check your load data in 3 or 4 different manuals and start with the load that recommends the least amount of powder.

I sometimes go off memory... but lately I've quit trying to do that. My memory isn't quite what it used to be... ;)

I do have a load for 45/70 405gr pellet with H335................It truly is T-REX capable.........But you WILL pay for it.......

A few years ago, I wanted back into the .45-70 game... I bought a beautiful Marlin 1895 LTD V. I found my old reloading notes for when I used to load for my Browning... reviewed my book data... and then loaded up 3 starting loads with a 350grn cast bullet, and starting 'lever-action loads' with IMR's 3031, 4895, and 4064. Boy HOWDY! those things kicked. So much so that I had to stop shooting those loads and put the rifle away... and I wound up pulling almost 100 cartridges... and I HATE pulling cartridges. A friend of mine was watching me from the other end of the firing line... he said HE hurt just watching me.

Since then, I've found my threshold of comfort is about 1600fps maximum for the .45-70, and really around 1400 is where I aim for.

I know what you're saying. I just bought a 458 Win mag. I haven't shot it yet but I'm probably going to fire my first rounds with 300 gr bullets. I'm a little "Scirred" those 500 grainers are going to put a hurtin on my shoulder.

What 458 did you get? I’ve shot a Model 70 Safari a couple times with full house 500’s. It wasn’t that bad at all. My Weatherby 375 H&H and my Marlin 1895GS with heavy loads are both far worse.

I shot one of those decades ago, with the 500 gr bullet. Kicks like a mule. After 1 shot I gave the gun back to my neighbor and told him just put the stock against the tree or telephone pole you want to take down. I only weighed 135 lbs and was wearing a tee shirt. Dead of summer in TX, 100F at the time.

Like Charlie said ^^^ . Here is what I use with my Lee mold when I cast 150 and 170 grain bullets for my Winchester 94. They work very well..https://www.sagesoutdoors.com/30-7-62-mm-caliber-015-copper-gas-checks/

I am running them with Hodgon Leverevolution powder and getting 2260 FPS average with the 150 grain bullets and 2060 FPS with the 170 grain. Very good accuracy and no noticeable leading.

Kindred spirit right there. And I get similar results with the Leverevolution propellant out of my 336. Great combo when combined with those gas checks.

Welcome to the club. I can barely remember what I had for breakfast these days ... and did I take my pills?

There's an app for that. I literally have an app that reminds me to take my flippin' pills.

Gettin' old is not for sissies.

Same here. The days of me rolling-up howitzer sized loads in the big bore are over. I can barely sleep on this shoulder anymore since the rotator cuff surgery ... and then the GSD puppy gave it a good yank walking her the other day - felt like she snatched it out-of-socket. I'm not cruisin' for a bruisin' with the 45-70 but, I need to find a load (probably with these FTX bullets) that I can still hunt whitetails with when I go up into straight-walled country ... Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin for me. Although I am having issues with Michigan's case length limit ... arghhh.

Hey, BTW, you mentioned QuickLoad. How do you like it? Would you recommend it? Is there much of a learning curve and is the data accurate? I'm wondering if it is available for any of my Android devices? I gave-up lap-tops and desk tops awhile ago opting for the portability and security options of Android's operating system but sometimes it is not as app friendly as MS.

A friend of mine has it, and has worked up some data for some of my loads. I mentioned that 1895 LTD V... I sold it to buy this guys Pedersoli 1885, which is my sole .45-70 now. Because I was relatively new to cast in rifle, he worked with me, providing data for some of my favorite loads... .308, .30-30, .348, and a few other odd combos. I've considered just biting the bullet and buying a copy meself... which I will likely do soon. I don't know how well it would work on a mobile device... the data it provides is best viewed on a monitor, because of the sheer amount of data it provides. One of the things I want to get a look at, that I've see with other posters, is the pressure graph showing where peak pressure occurs. Loading fast rifle powders... or slow pistol powders... you can bang the governor pretty quickly on pressure.

So true ... that's why I wanted it as well. I'm a stickler for checking for pressure signs when working-up a load but I could dig not having to actually test theoretical loads by detonation.

I tried calling their office to ask someone ... couldn't get past the switchboard (Marlene). But she did give me an email address to which I put forth my question.

This is a large Samsung tablet that I use. Tilted horizontally it is as large as a laptop's monitor. I take it to the range all the time and have it synced with shot timer and lab radar and I use data apps to handload on the spot at times ... but my stuff is Android based. I'll buy QuickLOAD in a heartbeat if it'll work on one of my tablets.
