17-5 should I buy

found a S&W 17-5 the only 17 made with a 4" bull barrel asking price of $600.00 I guess these are not rare but maybe uncommon. Finish is very good just a hint of blue wear at muzzle beautiful set of target S&W grips no box or extras. I have bought a few guns in the last two weeks funds are getting low But I could pull it off I hate to pass on nice guns I might go a while before any more nice one's come along and I don't have a .22 in the stable and feel like I need one. Are these worth the $600.00 I might be able to get it at $575.00 opinions please.

going into woobie mode here, but there is no finer DA 22 rimfire revolver made at any price bar none.. and they are getting scarcer and pricer, especially so in that condition
Rivaled only by the old Colts IMO, and perhaps some few of the old Dan Wessons

worth $600 you bet, and any dash will do ya'
the terms "K-17" and "K-22 Masterpiece" are legit synonyms, as you probably know
paid $600 for one of mine, talked the guy down to $550 on the other (but would have paid $600 anyway)
that was a few short years ago, and prices been rising on all guns since then
(I thought the only 4" models were k-18s, but that's moot)

"in 1986 They introduced the 4" heavy barrel like the one shown, as this replaced the model 18 and was the Only Model 17 to ever have a 4" barrel through the whole model 17 series. This design change is called the 17-4. The last design change for the Non underlug Barrel Model 17 Masterpiece series came in 1988. This series was called the 17-5 series and in 1988 a new Yoke retention package and radius stud were added."

I thought that to on the 4" barrel but it appears the 17-5 had a run of 4" heavy barrel.

They were produced from 1986 to 1989 in the 17-4 & 17-5 models.
The Model 18 seems to go for around $500 to $550 for a gun in excellent plus to NIB condition, so $575 is probably a little high today, but not enough that I would worry about it. Or you can just hold out for a Model 18.

I wouldn't let $25.00 stop me, like you said they don't come along very often. If in good shape it would fill that empty .22 hole in your collection with style and class. All the model 17's are fine, well built target guns and the 4 inchers are most excellent holster guns.

If you decide against it for some reason send the lead my way I'll take it!!

Remllez, I think I am going to get it as long as it checks out I haven't seen the gun in person only pics but I don't think you could shoot one loose with .22LR I passed on a 17 a couple of months ago because of the 6" barrel and I really want the 4" for field carry so even at six bills I think I am in. Should pay for itself in a few years of cottontail and rattlesnake meat!! well looks like this will be my last purchase for a month or so bought a 65-5 3" ladysmith a 4" M-57 P&R no dash now the 17 and had a Colt .357 trooper reblued all in the last two weeks looks like I am tapped out but it was a good run!!

You can't hunt with cash, defending yourself by pulling out a wad of notes cash will just bring more crooks and although you can fondle your cash at home its just not as much fun as dry fire practise. If you have all your other bills covered buying another gun is justifiable, rational, commonsense, logical... bah, just go and buy it and remember to post pics!
