I need a little talking into first. These are really nice looking pistols and I would love to have one to use for the range along with my Black Kimber Custom II with walnut grips. I see that they are in the mid to high 600.00 range for a used gun. I was wondering what is it about these pistols that come from S&W's performance center that makes that so great and why they cost as much as they do. I've really gotten rid of alot of guns but want to get a couple of "essentials" if you know what I mean. I'm taking the quality not quantity route I guess. I don't want alot of guns. I just want a few great quality guns that I know I could never get rid of and will be pround to own.

Thanks, Flip.

By black I guess you mean blued. The K comps were not made in great quantities and now they are almost 10 years old. That means you won't find one everyday. Sellers know they can get a premium for one and some may have rediculous price tags.
What made them special was they had recessed chambers and the recessed chambers on magnums was discontinued around 1982. It also had a full lugged barrel (something not found on any other M19), a 3" barrel (something else not commonly found on M19s), and the factory comp. They also had night sights up front and a matte finish. So as you see they are a special M19.
When buying limited out of production guns it becomes a matter of how bad you want one. You can pass one up now because of the price then find yourself waiting for who knows how long before another pops up and the price may then be even higher. Shop around and see if you find one cheaper, or if you can even find another one. Now don't take too long shopping or the one you are looking at may dissappear on you.

Thanks,

Who knows what I'll feel like tomarrow morning. Maybe I'll act on it and maybe I won't, who knows. I have the money for the one in question so, commitment is the biggest obstical. We'll see :) .

Thanks, Flip.

... they had recessed chambers ...
Neither of my M19-7 K-Comp revolvers has recessed chambers. These are over ten years old as I bought them before I moved to Georgia in March of 1995. I think I bought the first of my pair in April of 1994 after seeing it in a guncase for a few months. The serial number prefix on my pair is SDA01. On both of mine, the night sight insert is quite dim. It is about time to send them back to S&W for new tritium tubes.

These are Performance Center revolvers, having quite a bit of extra work in them. In addition to the expansion chamber, the enclosed ejector rod, and front night sight, the revolvers have a reshaped cylinder thumb piece, a profiled hammer spur, and a fixed trigger stop welded to the rounded trigger. The gold markings were not roll marked, and refinishing will eliminate them. How do I know? One of my pair has been refinished in NP3.

The K-Comp was a stocking dealer special, and a fairly large number were made. The F-Comp, basically the same revolver in stainless steel (an M66 variant), was made in much smaller quantities. The "F" denotes S&W's internal designation for the stainless K-frame. I am still looking for an F-Comp that was marketed right before the K-Comp hit the market.

I like my K-Comps but I do not like shooting them on an indoor range. The muzzle blast is extremely annoying due to the expansion port. I end up wearing muffs over plugs when I shoot mine. For a range-only gun, I would pass, preferring an M27-2.

I woke up feeling a little different today as predicted in my previous post. I WOULD like to get a K-comp but the price is the issue. I'm not much of a fan of 4in .357's and I don't want a snubby either. I had a 2.5in M66 and loved it but I really like 3in wheel guns. I'm looking at others to include a 3in GP100 which, would be more in my price range. I want a blued one though instead of stainless again to go with my Kimber. I'm going out of town for four days today to go to the lake and will put some thought in it. I won't have access to a computer so, I will probably go crazy not being able to look up stuff on both guns.

Thanks, Flip.

My M19-7

I love my K-comp model 19. ;) It is the best of my model 19s. If you can get one for $650 or less I would jump at it. $700 is the typical price +/- $35. You won't find them for sale very much any more. :uhoh: I would buy a second one any time.

Well, I got back today and it has sold. It went for 675.00 on gunbroker.com. Oh well, it was never meant to be :( . I guess I have to move on to the next thing on my list; a CDNN Hi Power. I'm going to give them a call next week to see what they still have in stock. I don't want an SFS or what ever that saftey thing is. We'll see  . Anyway, I just wanted to update you on things.

Thanks, Flip.
