Anyone have any experience with bolt actions in .17 "Mach 2"?

My older brothers big 50 is coming up and I know he wants one so the family is thinking of going together to get him one.

New to me, never shot one and all I know is that CZ and Savage make rifles in this caliber.

And if I understand correctly, this is not the same as ".17 HMR"?

The mach 2 is a 22 long rifle necked down to .17 and the hmr is a 22 mag necked down to .17.I have the hmr and am considering getting the mach 2 as well. The HMR ammo is $10 a box and the mach 2s are $7.I have the savage in hmr with the accutrigger.I cant believe how great the trigger is on this $180 gun.

For what it is, the Mach 2 is a great small game gun. Very flat shooting and accurate to about 200 yards. The only caveat is that the bullets are very light and prone to drifting in even a slight wind.

Dont bother with the mach 2, get the HMR and there will be no regrets later on. I dont think the mach 2 is very popular at all compared to the HMR.

I have had every model of mach 2made, under 500 bucks. they have all been great. the m2 is actually a stinger case necked down to 22, not a true 22lr.
they are the most fun you can have with a rimfire, a total fun time.
As far as picking a rifle goes, they are a bit hard to find new, you can find them also on gunsites such as gunbroker, auction arms, guns america, and don't forget Davidson's gun gallery, and do a search locator.
It is hard to go wrong with a cz, they are beautiful, have a great set trigger, and are very accurate. If you are going to carry it into the field, you may wanna look for a ruger walnut stock with a pencil bbl, or a savage synth stock, with a pencil bbl. I am allways on the lookout for the savage pencil bbl. However, i would not overlook anything laminate, heavy bbl, in Marlin, savage , or ruger as well. plus the ruger will come with a killer set of rings/mounts.
Most dudes who origionally had many 17hmrs, once they shot the mach2, got rid of all but one of their hmrs, and now have many mach 2s, mostly because of 2 reasons; fun factor and ammo cost. Cost is 1/3 the cost of hmr ammo.
Plus if your rifle likes eley/remmy ammo the best for accuracy, and it most likely will, these rounds are hotter loaded, and you get about 2300 fps from them, only a 400 fps drop from the hmr. Most hmr does somewhere between 2600 and 2700 fps now.
Lastly, the mach 2 will also fire the 17 aguila round, a true necked down
22lr round. it is a killer little round, fires a 20 grain fmj boat tail bullet; in either a solid point or hollow point, and it goes about 2000 fps from the
muzzle. if you like to keep game/fur/meat, this round drills tiny little entrance
and exit holes. the 17 mach 2, and especially the hmr, can leave some
pretty big blow up holes, especially within 100 yds.

if you go with the m2, get your ammo from online sources, this keeps the
cost to under 4 bucks a box. Such as our friends at ammunitiontogo.com.

Oh yeah, just to compare ammo cost; eley/remmy ammo from online sources is 4 dollars a box. Most hmr ammo is 12 dollars a box and higher-up to 15.
so lets go with 12. bucks. if you plink a lot, and I do, I can go through 200 rounds in a weekend easy. mach 2 = 16 bucks hmr = 48 bucks.
x 20 weekends a year at this rate mach 2= 320 bucks hmr = 960 bucks.
could you use an extra 640 bucks?

I see more .17HMR ammo in stores, but it's for my brother, and in talking to him trying to get ideas for a gift, he definitely wants the .17 mach 2.

My friend just got a 17 HMR from his father in law. Its a Savage with the Accutrigger. The rifle is very accurate and has almost no recoil.

FWIT, .17 HMR ammo is easily had here for 9.99-11.99 a box from local retailers in Suth Dakota. I picked up a brick awhile back from Wholesale Hunter for 8.47 per box, the entire brick delivered for under $100 bucks. I enjoy my .17HMR, but probably wouldn't at 15 bucks a box!

The only concern I have with the mach 2 is, will they keep producing ammo for it in years to come?Everyone I know shoots the hmr, which in Oregon is under 10 bucks a box and very abundant. Not so much for the mach 2.

Well, I'm afraid you guys may be right.

I've been checking several local store and gun shops today, and I'm seeing a trend.

No rifles in .17 M2 in stock, and it may takes weeks or more to get on if I order, and little to no ammo on local shelves.

That's kinda making me afraid to sink money into one, since it's a rimfire, if they quit loading for it, your pretty much looking at a new wallhanger.

Ok both 17 rimfires are so much fun they should be illegal. They are the most fun you can have clothed. I have to go with the HMR because I shot a Racoon in the head with a Mach2 and it bounced off. That being said it turned out that the second shot taken from my Brothers HMR penetrated completely through the skull. If your just plinking I guess it doesn't matter but I do hunt so HMR all the way.
