So between the limited amount of ammo that I have seen available, which one(s) are the best? Mostly punching holes in paper and groundhogs. Are they all about the same? Shooting it out of a Cooper, but have only tried one type so far. Thanks.

I only punch paper with my Marlin 17VS and T/C and find no difference between the CCI 17 HMR 17GR SPEER TNT HP and the Hornady 17GR V-MAX. One of the range officers has a NEF and swears by the Remington 17GR V-MAX Boattail. You are just going to have to try the ones that are out there to see which one gives you the best results. You might want to try the 17HMR forum over a Rmfire Central.

My heavy barreled Savage loves the 17gr Hornady. It did not like the 17 gr CCI's with the TNT or the Hornady with the 20gr XTP as well. Midsouth is selling the Hornady's for 7.18 a box. They have the other stuff too.

I have only shot the 17gr loads.
My savage shoots the CCI speer TNTs great. I have had 5 shots within 3/4" at 150 yards a few times. But the Federal and the Remington couldn't really hold a tight group. The Hornady shot ok, but not as good as the CCI, so I stick with those.

My Savage 93R17 doesn't care whether it's 17 or 20 gr. as long as it's the Hornady brand. Rumor has it all the ammo is made in the same plant(CCI) anyway.

My local shop sells it all for $7.99/box

CCI makes the brass and Hornady makes the bullets but I don't think they are assembled in the same plant.

true. but ammo is produced to the manufacturers specs. hence, the difference in results.

I've shot the CCI and the Hornady, both 17gr. The Hornady is the redtip, and the CCI a HP.

They both shoot well, in my NEF Handi Rifle, I'd say they are about the same. Different POI, but they are each sub-moa. Actually, just about sub 1/2 moa.

That's the beauty of the 17HMR. There is no junk ammo for this chambering. All available ammo is the rimfire equivalent of premium match ammo. It's all loaded very consistantly, all with premium bullets, all very uniformly made. That's why they are $9 for 50. You really can't go wrong. I really haven't heard of people saying how their rifle likes X brand while Y doesn't shoot well. That is non-existant. But that just depends how you look at it. Before when the only ammo was the Hornady, some people got an MOA gun, others got a 1/4MOA guns..people just assumed that it was the luck of the draw on rifles (yeah, I know - how dissappointing for the poor bastard who got the 1MOA rifle  ) While it might have been a difference in rifle quality within a brand or across brands, at least now there are more brands of ammo that gives people the chance to find one their barrel *really* likes.

This is nitpicking imo, because like I've said, the difference in quality from one brand of 17 ammo to another is almost nil. They are all made high quality. So your worst case scenario is shooting an ammo that the holes don't touch, and best case you make 1 hole. Remember, "doesn't group well" "my rifle don't like it" etc type statements in the 17hmr world are basically saying they are getting 1" groups at 100 yards instead of those 1-holers.

Oh the horror :D
