Im getting into 17 hmrand have a question.

Ive read and heard rumors that all 17 hmr ammo is made by cci and relabled accordingly , for witch brand it was produced for.

Is this a rumor because the plastic boxes they come in look as if they are all engineered and manufactured by the same company ,and then used by all manufactures?

Or is it all a big rumor thats not true at all? Ive have serched and found no hard evedince of this being true besides it mentioned a time or two on forums, and in gossup.

CCI (a division of ATK) loads all the 17 HMR that is sold under CCI, Federal, Hornady, and Remington brands.

i think there are some other brands that don't seem as popular. S&B, Winchester, maybe some others. they might be made by CCI as well.

Indeed, most of the .17HMR is loaded by CCI with Hornady Bullets, and is re-labeled by the various other venders.

As to "preferences", it's the lot-to-lot variation that you're seeing. I had one box of "Winchester" labeled 17gr poly-tips that significantly out-shot all the other ammo I've run through my gun. Unfortunately, the next box from a different lot# didn't perform any different from the "Federal" labeled boxes that are $2 less...... Ammo from that lot# shot sub-1/2" 5-shot groups. Typically, I see 0.8"-1.2" 5-shot groups @ 100yds.

I haven't gotten as good of accuracy from the 17gr and 20gr JHP's... And they shoot to a different POI from the Poly-Tips... Enough that you have to resight for the "other" ammo. Enough that the slight savings on the jhp's isn't off-set by having to "re-shoot" the zero. And, the 20gr ammo with a head-shot on a grey squirrel still takes the front shoulders with it... so not any better for "edible" game....
FWIW, I'll probably trade my rifle for a T/C Contender barrel in .17Hornet, and not look back...

I think it depends more on the rifle and whether it is the 17gr or 20gr version. I have two .17HMRs, a Ruger 77 with standard sporter barrel and an Anschutz 1517 MPR. The Ruger shoots well until the barrel heats up, then the groups go to hell no matter the ammo. The Anschutz shoots great under all conditions. I've shot 3 different brands; Hornady, CCI, and Winchester...I think; maybe it was Remington. No matter, they all shot the same. Now I buy Hornady 17 gr only since I found it cheaper than all the rest and it likes both of my rifles and really whacks prairie dogs.
