.17, in for the long haul?

Hi there.
Ever since I finished my 10/22 build, I've been looking at the next "gun".
By that I mean, what do I want? What do I need? What do I want and need?
Like most of us here, every time I ask myself that question... I come up with a lot of answers.

Let's call them possibilities.

Anyway, I've been thinking about the .17. I have much to learn about it, and it's going good so far. But I came across some statements that have me scratching my head.
It appears some are of the belief that the .17 Mach 2 round will be out of production sometime in the future. Maybe the near future. Some have stated manufacturers are halting or reducing their .17 M2 rifle production, and that is an indicator of what's to come.
I see the pros and cons of both rounds. But like most people, I don't want to buy a rifle I can't feed down the road. So, what do you think? Is the .17 M2 in danger? Is it the other way around? Is this much ado about nothing?
 
Check your crystal ball for answer - cost of the ammo is the limiting factor for me. I would rather spend my $'s on 17 HMR ammo and get the increased range. Others want a high performance round as their shooting needs are shorter range.
 
.17HMR is a seriously fun, seriously accurate round, but I can't reload for it and the ammo prices are very high. Of late, I have been leaving it in the safe as a result :(
 
Price is one of my concerns too.
True, the .17 HMR has some more "oompf". And it really excels at a hundred yards plus (66.5 or .8 yards "more" than .17 M2 before drop I think). But at one hundred yards and under it seems the .17 M2 is almost the same, if not identical.
Add the lower cost of M2 ammo, and it starts to look really attractive.

I'd love to get into reloading, I even have a press and some books.
But I can't take it up right now...

I do appreciate that.... it has taken me over a year to get into it... :)
 
I'll be purchasing a .17 HMR rife in the next year or so, but I probably won't shoot it too often. Why would I when I can shoot .22 LR all day for $20?

I suspect I will use .17 HMR for squirrels and .22LR for plinking/range use.
 
I am going to go a totally diff way here; the 17hmr is in danger , the mach 2 is not. The mach 2 ammo is not slowing down in production at all, this from a ammo dealer friend of mine. And it's cost is not prohibitive to plinking, the hmr is.
The 5mm mag round is now being made again, and will be offered in two diff types, the current which will be fine for those who have the old remmy rifles, and a hotter version , which will fire a 35 or 38 grain bullet at about 2500 fps.
This round doubles the pressure of the 17hmr and the 22 mag. It also will develop about 400fte from the bbl, which for a rimfire is amazing.
This round will fly nearly as flat as a 17hmr, with double the energy downrange, think of a mini 22 hornet. This round will cost the same, or less , than the 17hmr. What would you do??? That's right, I will be getting a new 5 milly rifle, the very second they come out.
Most dudes I know, love the mach 2 round, and the rifles, for the plinking ability, and the low cost. Plus the mach 2 rifles can fire the 17aguila/pmc/hi-standard round, which i think is kick-@!s as well; a 20 grain solid fmjbt, that leaves the muzzle at about 1900 fps. This gives great penetration, and doesn't explode the fur or give a bunch of meat damage.
 
Yeah, I was reading about the 5mm on the net!
But I can't seem to find the link/page...It sounds like a great round. I'm going to keep my eye on that one and see what happens.
As far as the Mach2, I've heard that too. That's why I'm confused! :D
 
The 17HMR is fun but when you figure 21 to 25 cents per squeeze the 223 becomes a more attractive option if you reload. The 22 LR will be around when the little 17RF's have been forgotten.
