So what's up with this cartridge? I always hear about the .17HMR but very rarely(read never) about this other one..

What velocity does it boast? Bullet types/weight options?

What is it's price? Can it possibly substitute the expensive-er hypervelocity/designer .22LR offerings?

Is it still in production or has it failed to find support among shooters?

Does anyone own a gun cambered for this? How does it shoot?

The .17 HM2 is the .22 long rifle Stinger necked down to .17 caliber. Marlin, Savage and CZ make the most popular rifles in this caliber. I have a CZ 452 Varmint with Brooks trigger kit topped with a Bushnell/Browning 5-15x40mm.
See the link for detailed info.

I watched Justin do in a fair number of prairie dogs with his. Quite nice to 100 yards. It took him a bit of figuring about trajectory and wind, but he was soon doing in PDs out to 200 yards.

The MV is around 2,200 ft/sec. The .17HMR is around 2,600. I've no idea about how loud is the HMR in comparison.

I guess I'd figure the Mach II as an "around the house" critter, with the HMR more suitable for out in the pasture. :)

.17M2 was designed to make the .17 rimfire fit in a .22LR action. As a result, it doesn't have the velocity of the .17HMR.

It makes little sense to me, in a bolt gun, but if you want to rebarrel your 10/22, you can get a semiauto that uses it.

Most gun manufacturers have ditched it.

I use the HM2 far more than the HMR, in fact I rarely shoot the HMR anymore, while the HMR has better ballistics, it costs significantly more, about 3 times the price. It is about identical to the HMR in trajectory out to 100 yards, within every single one of my shots on rabbits and squirrels. As a hunting round the 22lr cannot match it. I have yet to see a factory HM2 print over 1/2 inch when it is using the ammo it likes.

I love it, luuuuuuvvvvvv it, it is my favorit rimfire round.
it is 1/3 the cost of the hmr. it goes about 2100 fps, but the eley/remmy
ammo is about 200 fps faster, wheeeee!!!! that means it is only about 300 to 400 fps slower than a hmr.
a mach 2 rifle also shoots the 17 aguila round, a real 22lr case, that fires a 20 grain fmj boat tail , or hollow point boat tail.
They are awesomely accurate, and the fun factor is not even on the charts!!!!
a 100 yd zero drops 5 inches at 150 and 12 inches at 200, the eley/remmy
ammo does it about 3 inces at 150, and about 9 inches at 200.
all the rifles made for this round are accurate; there are no losers in the bunch, and I have had them all, that cost 500 or less. Even the single shots.
Again, the ammo cost; if you buy off the net, about 4 to 5 bucks a box.
hmr ammo is about 13 bucks a box, for craps and giggles , lets say 10 a box.
If you shoot/plink a lot like I do, I can go through 4 boxes of m2 ammo , on a weekend easy. that is a diff of 10 bucks of m2 ammo versus 20 for the hmr.
Lets say, you shoot this amount, 20 times a year. that is 200 bucks right there, and that is if your hmr ammo is only 10 bucks a box, and that is if you only shoot 20 times a year, and only 4 boxes at a time. Increase each of these settings by one, and your cost starts to expand exponentially.

Terminal results are explosive on small game, literally. Out to 100 yds, the m2 bullet is faster than a 22 is at the muzzle. With a 100 yds zero, your typical rise , through a low mounted scope, is only about .7 inches at 50 yds.

The M2 is an awesome little round..! My 22s have become very lonely since i started shooting the M2 4 yrs ago.:D

17 mach2 is a great round.. I have built 2 10/22's in 10/22 and love them.. I just picked up 2000 rounds of eley for 3.75 a box at ammunition to go monday.. Way better than my 17hmr

I picked up a Browning BL-17 from CDNN a couple years ago and love it. I use it around the house to keep squirels off the bird feeders and rabbits out of the garden.:D

I don't understand how the manufacturers justify the price difference btw the HMR and the HM2. a little bit more brass, a little bit more powder. The expensive part has got to be the precision bullets on top, and they're the same. Similar the .22WMR. If they can make a .17HM2 for $5/box, they can make a HMR for $7. And thus a .22WMR for the same $7 for the low-end bullets, or a little more for the exra material in the high-end (.17-style) bullets. I've all but stopped shooting both my magnum rimfire rifles, and am cranky about it. :p

ABSOFREAKINGLUTLY!!! On the same note, why can I buy a box of 20 guage shells, 25 count, for 6 dollars. That is cheaper than the HMR. More powder, more lead, not as much brass depending on whether is it high or low base, MORE materials, but it is the same price.

I picked up a left handed Savage for my son, And like KzoneAl said it has made all of our 22's lonely. from starlings , sparrows, possum & raccoon all have been taken. We use Hornady 17gr. V-MAX This rifle shoots better than any 22 I own!

this is the primarly reason, that most dudes, who had multiple hmrs at one time, now only have 1 or zero now, and have switched to the m2. much more versatile in my opinion, lighter, more diff versions, both pencil bbls, and heavy bbls, Eley / remmy is precision ammo, and eley has finally decided to really standardize how they load this ammo. Plus it is a hotter round anyway. To be honest, the remmy ammo is proly what eley boxes for remmy, that doesn't quite qualify to make it into one of their boxes!!!!

And above dude; 3.75 a box for eley ammo is totally sick, you got a hellofa deal there.
Once you fire this round, your 22's will feel like a red headed step child...

it just showed up today as a matter a fact.. I have run over 1000 rounds of eley.. I love it as far as being a accurate consistant ammo.. it is just dirty and also smells like burning flesh:p
