17 Remington vs 223 report

I have both bolt rifles in 17 Rem and 223 Rem and ARs in 17 Rem and 223 Rem and I cannot say there is a noticable difference in report.

If you put some since behind it, it may be measurable.

221 Rem Fireball is not as loud as either 17 Rem or 223 Rem for a point of reference.

It's not at all scientific, but from real world experience you can compare the amount of powder used and it will give you some idea, assuming close to equal barrel lengths and burn rates.

For example, my .204 Ruger and .223 seem pretty close. The 22-250 is seemingly louder and uses 38 grains versus 25-27 for the others. Those are louder than a Hornet that uses 12 grains.

Same thing with pistol. 38 Special is not as loud as a 44 mag, and uses less powder.

There are obviously a lot more factors that go into it, but I kinda use that as a rough idea.

Barrel length ! My .204 is SIGNIFICANTLY LOUDER than my .223

.204 has a 22 inch barrel......223 has a 26 inch.

My ears haven't noticed a difference between a 24" .17 & a 22" .223.
They have, however noticed the difference between 16" bbls & 22" bbls in .223.
I believe any difference between .17 Rem & .223 Rem is minimal, if any.

I suspect it has to do with the fact that the gases are hotter and still expanding with a shorter barrel. I believe that's the reason you get a fire ball with a short barrel and slower powder.
