175gr LSWC 40S&W load help

Awhile back I casted some 175gr (Lee mould) LSWC at 401 diameter. I picked up a pound of AA#5 today to load some up. Doing a ladder starting at 6.1 up to 6.6, this data comes from the Lyman 49th. Upon reading in this forum and many others there are claims that most Kabooms utilized AA#5. I'll be shooting them out of a CZ P09. What is the consensus? Safe? Unsafe? I've never been much the lead type of guy but times are calling for it. I also have CFE and WSF but cannot find data for the above mentioned bullet. If this powder-bullet-gun combination is doable what do Ya'll recommend or use? Thank you in advance.
 
I recently worked up a load for an RCBS 10mm-170-SWC (actually falls around 177-178 gr) and I've had good results with Auto Comp in a Glock running them at 926fps. No bulges in the case or anything like that.

I never heard AA#5 causes Kbooms but many Kbooms include the powder Titegroup. AA#5 is safe as far as I know but in the 40 S&W you might want to use AA#7 instead. It's a better choice IMO although AA#5 will work well too.

2003 Winchester load data has loads for 170/200 gr lead bullets. You can always reference the load data for slightly heavier bullet for your powder work up. For 175 gr lead bullet and WSF, how about 4.5 gr as start charge and working up to 5.5 gr? - http://castpics.net/LoadData/Freebies/RM/Winchester/Winchester2003.pdf

200 gr. Lead WSF Start 3.9 gr (785 fps) 21,800 PSI - Max 5.0 gr (920 fps) 33,200 PSI

Current Hodgdon load data lists 180 gr Berry's plated bullet (BERB) and 200 gr Hornady XTP - http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol

180 gr Berry's FP WSF Start 5.5 gr (952 fps) 27,600 PSI - Max 6.0 gr (1,020 fps) 33,500 PSI
180 gr Berry's FP CFE Pistol Start 5.9 gr (1,007 fps) 25,500 PSI - Max 6.5 gr (1,092 fps) 32,600 PSI
200 gr Hornady XTP WSF Start 4.4 gr (786 fps) 27,300 PSI - Max 4.8 gr (867 fps) 33,100 PSI
200 gr Hornady XTP CFE Pistol Start 4.4 gr (833 fps) 27,800 PSI - Max 4.8 gr (897 fps) 33,500 PSI
 
Thank you for the info. Thank you for replying. I've been reloading for quite a while but only have about 500 rounds lead in my 9mm and about the same in my 45. I've not fired or loaded a single lead round for my 40.

If your OAL ends up being shorter than published, you could consider decreasing the max charge by .2-.3 gr so 5.2 - 5.3 gr as max.

Hodgdon's current load data used 1.125" and I believe Winchester load data used 1.135".

I have never read or seen anything about AA 5 causing problems or Kbooms??

The Glock 40 SW yes,(unsupported chamber) there is lots on that but not due to the powder. Of course there is lots on shooting or not shooting lead bullets in a Glock barrel.​
 
AA5 is the most accurate powder I have found for .40 S&W, but generally only up to mid-range. For more power, Silhouette or Power Pistol are best.
With 175gn L-SWCs, I get great accuracy from 5.5-6.0gn of AA5. Above 6.0gn the groups open up.
 
AA#5 is a great powder i use it in both 40 and 10 it doesn't meter worth a crap but I use it for full power loads and measure Everytime for safety sake , start low and watch for pressure and make sure you brass is the correct length, also every powder company lists there powder data minus Hornady which you can find data on anyway
