Anyone have an idea on what the velocities would be with the .17HMR out of a 2" bbl gun?
This has me very intrigued.

Dunno, I thought it might have some good velocities, but it doesn't.
Barely 1200fps. Seems pretty lame to me.
Oh well, I will have to set my eye on something else.

you can gettem' cheap, right now

at CDNN (less than $300); no wonder, it's like using a flyswatter to stop tanks. Per several articles I read, the authors don't reccomend shooting anything larger than a prarrie dog, and that's out of a rifle. Could these be converted to .22lr or .22short (backyard varmit control) very easily? at 8 or 9 shots, it would be worth it. (I didn't look, but they probably make a .22 same size/capacity) but they're not on sale.

.17 HMR

First off, hello everyone. I'm Mason, I'm new here, and upon looking around for a forum that was not seething with flamers and gradeschool talking spammers, this place looks halfway comfortable.

I'd have to say that I myself have a .17 Savage rifle. I enjoy it for critter hunting, if you will. Rockchucks, Foxes, even Coyotes are easily dropped with it. My own opinion is that it is underestimated, however it is what it is. I originally got it to stave off a racoon problem we had been having...But enough of that...

Now, I have a couple handgun questions for ya:

1) I was strongly looking at getting a .45 1911 from Springfield Armory. 5.01" barrel length. I have a thousand friends, as we all do, who are compelled to tell me I am better off getting a 9mm. I've checked out the XD .40 as well and am leaning that way somewhat. It would kind of be an all around pistol, not one I would necessarily carry on my person so much as have for target shooting as well as perhaps home defense. What is your favorite pick for a handgun in that regard? I've tried shooting glocks as well as the Beretta 9mm (that was a few years ago) and though I liked the feel of the Berettta, anything with polymer handles were not to my liking.

2) Upon further searching, I'm coming up with a wide variety in prices for the same kind of pistol (.45 auto). Most of this of course differs with Brand name. I'm seeing anywhere from $550.00 to 2,300.00 depending. Springfield has the U.S. "G.I." model at around 550 but then several of their others (believe the other one I liked was called black-stainless) are around $1,000.

Anyways, thanks for your time. I'm just wanting some opinions on those things before I purchase. I'm anxious to get out and get some shooting in with a new handgun.

I have to admit being strongly prejudiced in favor of the M1911 -- haveing carried one for more years than I care to admit. It is an excellent target pistol, when properly fitted, and a superb fighting pistol.

The great curse of the M1911 is that everyone and his dog has manufactured them. Everyone's pistols are usually okay, but the dog has a problem with quality control.;)

Springfield, Kimber and Colt have good reputations, although all three have gone through some bad patches. I personally carry a Kimber that is about 10 or 12 years old. Some later Kimbers, I understand, had problems. I also have an Argentine M1927, which was made under Colt supervision on Colt machinery in Argentina, and is basically a 1930s-era Colt. Both of these guns are highly reliable, and the Kimber has the best trigger I've ever seen on an M1911.

Vern,

Hello, and yes I see what you mean by all the manufacturers! I would definitley be interested in checking out Kimber's models. I don't mind if I pay more, if I know I'm getting high quality, I was just leary for the fact there are so many various kinds out there. Thanks so much for your reply. --Mason

I herd Taurus was having problems with the 17 in revolvers. The cases were splitting and they got stuck in the cylinder.

Now who would have thought a bottle-neck, relatively high pressure rimfire cartridge would give trouble in a revolver?

I think if you emptied one into an BG, you could surely make them very sick. YMMV.

Yes, but would you survive the encounter as the enraged BG would grab you by the throat and proceed to choke the Life out of you and then BG would succumb to severe internal bleeding -- Maybe.

No "Second Place Winner" here! :(

What would you need a .17 HMR snubby for?
Protection against man-eating rabbits.
Those things are dynamite!
Now just imagine if Arthur had had a .17 snubby, he wouldnt have needed the holy hand grenade.
