HM2

lots of customization options on 10/22 platform

Con
few rifles made stock for it
only one bullet type
only produced in 1 lever gun, discontinued Browing BL-17

HMR
Pros
longer range
more stock rifles
lots of customization option on the 10/22MAG platform
more available bullet types
comes in a current production lever gun (Henry)

Cons
ammo price

Over all Pro for both
trajectory over .22 caliber contemporary

Over all Con for both
wind has a big affect on the 17 gr bullet

Both are, HM2 a little and HMR alot, overpowered for squirrels unless taking head shots. I have a HM2 and have gone back to my .22 because it is more forgiving to the meat in a badly placed hit on the target. That being said I really like the HM2 for target shooting, I like shooting out passed 100 yards with a rimfire. I will be picking up an HMR for small to medium varmits.

17 Mach 2 is basically a .22LR necked down to .17.
17 HMR is basically a .22Mag necked down to .17.

That's about it :). If you want a little faster .22LR, get a 17 mach 2. If you want a little faster .22 mag, get a 17 HMR.

17 mach 2 is the funnest round ever made, for ever, I love it, but i do have both.
the hmr , i would not hesitate to take a coyote with it, the mach 2, I would but it would have to be close, like sneak up on me close, even though it may not be necessary.
the mach 2 will also shoot the 17pmc / 17 aguila round. I love the 17 aggies, it is a 20 grain fmj round, that zips right through your game, without blowing it up. the 17hmr will blow up small game, all the way up to fox size really.
anything smaller than a fox, you may or may not have much left.
ammo is much cheaper in mach 2 form, especially if ordering off the internet.
you can find it for 4 to 5 bucks a box, easy, from many diff sites. ammotogo, still has some of their Eley mach 2 for 3.50 a box, which is totally sick!!!!
Here are some places to check out trajectory, energy, etc.

I've gone prairie dog hunting with Larry Ashcraft a few times, and between the two of us, we've got those calibers covered.

The differences between the two cartridges aren't as big as you would expect. Both of them are absolutely phenomenal for punching holes in prairie dogs. The HM2 seems to lose it's oomph at just about 200 yards, the HMR goes a bit further.

There's a noticeable difference in volume, with the HMR being louder than the HM2, though hearing protection is required with both.

Some people are outfitting the 10/22 with a .17 HM2 barrel, though if you're on a budget, the CZ 452 is a reasonably priced, quality firearm that is available.

All I've got to say is this: a rifle in either caliber and a big ol' field full of curious prairie dogs makes for an extremely fun afternoon.
