If I go to the center fire realm I'll just use my 25-06 instead of a new caliber to load. Also my state (on public land) does not allow center fire for coyotes during anything but bear and deer seasons. We have been going around and around with the game wardens and most of them don't really know ether. One game warden told my buddy on the phone (we had a discussion on minimum deer caliber, which is not in the game book) he was seeing people killing whitetails with .17 HMR's. Don't have any idea how many just get injured this way.

I was hoping to see other people taking game out at 200+yds with the HMR. As I said mainly for ground hogs, but a coyote gun in a pinch.

I havent shot anything bigger than a groundhog with my 17HMR. Out of the 3-4 groundhogs Ive killed with it, only one of them was able to move after the first shot. I dont know how it was able to wobble off, but it did. I shot it flat on the ground facing me. I think it just went down one side rather than goin thru. It was a very good blood trail out into the field. I think he had gone all he could go when I came around the shed, but the 2nd shot made sure.
Most all of my groundhog kills have been made within 75yd, usually 50 or so. I have shot some crows(shh) at 150yds with it, but I miss way more than I hit.
I have a REM 597(jamatic dont buy one) with a Tasco 3x9x40scope. I wish I had went with a Savage with AccuTrigger, the REMs trigger is like pulling a brick with your finger, and it jambs terrible.(needs to go byebye). My neighbor has had 2 Savages. First one was stolen, had bull barrel, bipod, and 50mm scope like my 40mm, that was an awesome shooter. His second Savage same as first one with bull barrel but this time the BSA sweet17 scope....junk. Anything in the 50yd range it was dead, but start screwing with the range knob and who knows where it would hit.

I vote for the Savage and good scope.

to DZL HOG; easy fix on the remmy, get the latest generation magazines, pull the assy / action out. remove the back plate, pull out the receiver guide rods, put them back in finger tight, just enough to put the back plate back on. Your prob is either being made by older gen mags that were incorrectly spec'd out, or the guide rods , put in by the factory , are too tight, and are binding as the bolt carrier moves rearward.

Hi folks!
well Ive owned the Marlin 917 for about 3+ yrs.. and now, just today I picked up the Savage 93R17...
Ive got good with the 917. golfballs at 100yds consistantly. and I know a few yotes that will tell you 20gr wasnt too light out past 100.
Ive got a Tasco Bucksight 3x9 x40mm on both of them. I like the lower power with larger view, and the 9x is good and clear for targeting etc.
I only have 15 of the CCI 20gr gamepoints thru the savage to get the scope zero. but tomorrow I look foreward to seeing more of its ability. I really like the trigger, but it feels a little more soggy, while the 917 feels more crisp, for me anyway.
