18" 870 barrel

Does Remington no longer sell these? I have tried natzez, midway, and a local dealer today said that 20" inch was the shortest remington brand he could get. :confused:
 
Part number is 242243 for the 18.5". Try the Remington website.
I ordered direct for under $100.
As far as I know it is still available.
 
I presume you want a rifle sighted 18" (smooth bore??) barrel. Remington still makes these but they are usually on back order. I ordered one a couple of months ago direct from the factory, and it took over a month to get it to me.

The mossy barrels are just to thin for my taste, not saying they are bad I just prefier remington.
 
check ebay. There were several new/near-new barrels pulled from police 870s for sale although not cheap. I ended up with a 20 inch rifle sighted barrel; lots of those for sale, but I wanted rifle sights instead of a bead.
 
I have both a 870 Police model 18" smooth bore barrel with rifle sights, and a Mossberg made barrel for an 870 with bead sight.

The Mossberg does appear to be thinner but I have had no problems with it - so I can recommend it if you are set on the bead sight option.

Found one

A gun shop about 30 minutes from me is going to order me one for $120.00, does this sound like a pretty good price?
 
That seems a skosh high for a bead sighted barrel. I'd have expected closer to 100 bucks, maybe even less. Is it CYL or IC, Express or polished?

I think he said cylinder and its the parkerized police version. Also will the barrel have the little ball on the barrel mount for my magizine tube endcap? My gun is a older 870 that has the ball and detent and I have been hearing the new ones have dimples and diffrent endcap, will this create any problems or just a simple barrel change?
 
That price is probably about right for a barrel that is really park'd and not an Express.
The new Express barrels do not have the detent ball or even a hole in which to install one.
If this is a police barrel, it should still have the detent as they still use the old-style mag spring retainer, i.e. no PC dimple caca.

If it don't have the detent ball what will keep my mag cap from coming loose? Also if it don't have one will I need to buy the new style mag cap? Is there anyway I will be able to keep the mag cap from coming loose?
 
Here is one for $100. You could call and inquire as to the type of magazine cap it supports. Without the ball I think you would have trouble keeping the cap tight since your tube doesn't have the dimples for the newer type cap.

That depends. The factory extensions that I have still use the detent in the barrel to secure the collar (which is essentially a cap with a hole in it) to keep the extension tight. The clamp will hold the tube to the barrel and help to keep the whole assembly in place but it does not use all that much clamping force. It is best to have the detent as well in my opinion.
If you have really purchased a police barrel, I am pretty sure it will have the detent ball.
The PC dimple retention system works pretty well, inspight of my personal distaste for it but you do not want to convert to that as you'd have to put dimples in a perfectly good non-dimpled gun and then you could not run an extension if you were so inclined.
My advice, for what it's worth, is to make sure that you get a barrel with a detent.

On the two Express' here at casa del 9mm, I have swapped to barrels with the detent. One of these currently runs a factory extension as well.
The other has used, on occasion, a new-style 26" VR Express barrel that I bought new. It is my only rem-choke barrel and I bought it so I'd have a barrel long enough to go shoot with Dave McC someday. His club has a barrel length restriction. Now I have a 30" fixed choke VR that is way nicer.....
Anyway, this new Express barrel does not have the detent or even the hole to install one and the mag cap comes loose all the time while shooting. If I install with pliers, it will stay put but who wants to do that?

It depends. If hand-tightened, it can be loose after the first few stations on a SC course and I spend the rest of the day checking the cap after every station.
Tightening with pliers, just one little umph (technical term) passed hand tight can keep it in place for an entire round, but I still need to check since I cannot trust it to stay put.
In my opinion it is just not worth the hassle.
The barrels with detents and the correct cap just stay put when tightened by hand. I still check every once in awhile, out of habit, to make sure that it's tight but I have had good luck with them staying put.

I was just looking at the wilson combat 1 shot extension and it don't make any use of a detent ball even if the barrel had one. What keeps these from coming loose, and I know you wouldn't need a clamp with a solid short 1 shot extension.
