Anyone know if the replacement 18" Remington 870 barrels are threaded for chokes? Are you stuck with cylinder bore if you go this route?

not completely sure but probably not threaded. Mine isn't. An 18 inch barrel is typically intended for a home defense gun whereas longer barrels are for hunting. Chokes are needed for hunting, not home defense. Choking off buck shot isn't really needed at indoor/home defense ranges and not particularly recommended.

I have not seen one. My 18" Rem 870 barrel is not threaded for chokes. I wouldn't want it, too close to the line. I want my barrel to full thickness around the 18" mark.

The only ones I've ever seen, I had done aftermarket. I've never seen a factory Remington 18" barrel threaded for choke tubes.

Most short (18- 20") Remington barrels made in the past few years have had ImpCyl fixed chokes from the factory. The 870 Express HD versions still have CYL chokes last I knew.

ETA 3 Sept 09- saw my first Remington 870 TACK TICKLE!!!!!!! yesterday while checking my favorite fun shops. It had an 18.5" bead sighted barrel, complete with a factory two round magazine extension, a BBQ grill finish and a toothy ported screw-in breaching-duty-ready choke tube. So yes, Remington now makes an 18.5" barrel threaded for choke tubes. (Can you tell I am not impressed?) See http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/shotguns/model_870/model_870_express_tactical.asp , especially if the word TACTICAL stamped into the receiver of an 870 Express gun makes your wittle heart go pittypat.

If you are going to put any so called 18" barrel on a Rem. 870; try it to your gun by closing the action and measuring with a rod that has a mark on it at 18" run straight down the barrel.

If the mark does not stay inside the barrel, do not possess it!

A few years ago an Idaho man had his dog, 12 year old son, and wife shot dead by Fed LE agents because he measured two Rem. 870 barrels on the outside for 18". He came up a little short when measured on the inside.

Not sure if they still make them or not but they used to offer a 20" barrel with rifle sights and interchangeable chokes. My brother has one. It is only 1 1/2" longer and is quite handy. They also offer a 21" turkey barrel that is threaded. Just my opinion, but either would be short enough for me.

My 870 tactical came with an 18" barrel and a threaded "self defense" choke.

Not sure about replacement barrels but one would think you could buy the same "self defense barrel /choke combo" that came OE on my gun.

FYI, I put a turkey choke on it and despit the looks at the range, shoot trap just fine with it.

An 870 bbl can be threaded for tubes by a gunsmith, provided your bbl is thick enough. They have 'thinwall' tubes made by colonial.

FWIW... I had one threaded and had a full choke installed. It worked fine until a buddy of mine stuffed a high brass #4 in it and blew the choke right out, ruining the bbl.

So, yes. It can be done, but I'd stick to standard or low powered loads.

The LE Only version of the 870 does come threaded for Remchoke. Replacement barrels are available to law enforcement. They are parkerized, but unless you know someone that can get one for you, you're gonna have to have it threaded which is not that expensive.
