My Circa 1961 G.U. Uberti is getting a half inch hole drilled down its tube. The cylinder is having none of it though, so after the "tease" I assure it (the cylinder) there's an L. Romano .36 cal custom cut rifled barrel liner on order, with a gain twist that ends up somewhere between 32 - 36 twist. Haven't decided yet. My uncle bought this pistol brand new at a little shop owned by a gentleman named Howard Dost, way up the Rio Grand Gorge near Los Alamos, NM in 1961, when he was 21 years old. He'd be nearly 81 years old if he were still with us. Rest his soul. At some point, either during manufacture (doubtful), or while in my uncle's possession, the otherwise stock looking front bead was fit into a threaded hole, just like a shotgun would have. Since all I ever heard of in these clones were pressed in front beads, I'd like to rib Uncle Joe for the awful aftermath, iffin' he were still with us. Seems the drill and tap operation nearly entered the bore, which became "proud" under the sight. Compounding the debacle someone tried to hand file the offended land-and-groove to mask the travesty. Not pretty. Rather than endure the nagging suspicion that this has a deleterious effect on where the balls are headed, I opted to commence a rigorous resurrection that he'd likely approve of, starting with the temporary half-inch-bore (hence the thread title). This will be done in my spare time, meaning it may take a while, but it will get done. All my projects manage to somehow some way.

Once the barrel is addressed, and after installing the home-made heat treated/tempered A2 lug, and fitting a new wedge, I'll finalize the OAL of the three new cylinders, and commence locating the first spot where a chamber should be in each of them (cylinders). Then I'll need to sniff out how to do any and all reliability mods seen here in my years of "lurking", such as the hand-spring mods, etc, indirectly related to the timing operation components, The chamber pilots will be line-bored, so "timing" is a misnomer, but I'd like to thoroughly address all nuances of the components that are related to timing prior to line boring the cylinders. Sadly many of the "links" to such affairs wind up on "404" pages, un-findable, with nary an archive or re-direct. So plan "B" was Goons... I have heard it's difficult to reach Mike though, and have yet to hear back from him myself, so it's my most sincere belief by the time the finishing touches are required on this gun, y'all might help me finish it right. I'll be doing everything to include color case hardening (old school way) along with several other receivers/restorations beside it on the bench. Also doing all draw filing, milling and turning in house. Only aspect I'll farm out is bluing. Have no desire to do that beyond tidbits where cold-blue suffices.

That will be an interesting project. I hope you will keep us in the loop. And... pictures!

Will do .38 Special.
One of the other guns on the bench alongside the Uberti, is a 1st Gen SAA Colt that was converted to .38 Special in the mid fifties. I'm leaving the grip frame nickel plating intact, but replacing the ejector housing with a NOS vintage replacement, a NOS Colt .38 SPL barrel, and case hardening the frame after the rebuild. Figure a facelift would be acceptable since it had already been modded 60-70 years ago.

I was looking forward to a .50 cal conversion, but this project sounds pretty cool anyway. Good luck, please post pics.

Update;
Spoke with Mike (Goons Gun Works) yesterday at great length. Words fail me. Suffice it to say I’m convinced he’s the salt of the earth, and the sort of fellow who’s an asset to any discipline or cause he aligns himself with. He’ll be getting the nod when my guns are ready for finishing touches, and I certainly won’t mind however long he takes to improve them. Thanks to this forum for helping people find him!

Salute!

4140 cold rolled steel I make most of my cylinders from, pre heat-treated to 30.5 C (average) Rockwell (measured on a Newage ME-2 tester)

Making 3 for the 1851, along with 2 for a Colt 3rd gen Signature Series Walker I was almost gonna sell.

Replacing the grips. Had Uncle Joe finished the other side I’d’ve let them be. He wrote me a letter before he passed explaining he’d approve of my replacing them. Might transfer the diamond shaped sterling roadrunner medallions into the new ones. Not sure yet.

Pretty sure I’d like to carry over the sterling roadrunners from Uncle Joe’s old grips. Only they’d be carved and set flush in the new set.
