I know its been asked, and yes, I found some old answers in the search box. But I'd rather be safe than sorry, so I'm going to go ahead and ask what's been asked before. Who knows, maybe a recent purchaser has had a new and different experience with chamber size and what all.

I'm pretty sure Santa is going to bring me a steel framed Uberti 1851. Is it still the consensus that .380 balls are the ones to go with? How about a Triple 7 load?

777 load: 20 gr fff by volume.

And yes, Uberti .36 cal revolvers take .380 balls. Piettas take .375's.

I have a Uberti 1851 .36 (made in 2010) and somehow wound up casting .375 balls for it and it is my most accurate cap and ball so far. Come to think of it there is not much "shaving" when I ram the ball into the cylinder but it is tight... maybe I should be shooting .380:banghead:
I tried 777 in mine because real black powder is hard to find around here and found that in spite of it's greater power the carbon crap it produced would require me to disassemble the gun every 200-300 rounds. The carbon follows the inside of the hammer down into the trigger works and plugs it up. Switched to Goex FFFG ...problem solved.
Here is a picture of the Uberti 1851 and a Colt 1849 Pocket .31 cal 5 inch barrel:

I've had pretty good luck with Triple 7, so long as its not overly compressed. When that happens, it gets a bit dirty, and its power seems to drop way off. Stripping the gun down to clean it isn't a big deal- I'm a bit obsessive about cleaning my guns and regardless of whether I'm using BP or Triple 7, its getting stripped down. Its ridiculous how well it shoots in my Hawken.

Than said, I still plan to make the 40 minute drive to pick up a little BP today.
