anyone use a uberti 1858 carbine for hunting?what's your favorite load?

I just use mine for target shooting my favorite cap and ball load is 25gr 777 fff & .454 ball.I shot over a chrono average speed was 1000 fps. I have also use the same loads of pyodex & alient black black mz. but haven't tried that over a chrono that carbine shoots great no matter what you put in it Chronicles work well too.

I have shot conicals, 200 gr lee mold, I cast my own stuff. I also have a conversion cylinder, shoot 200 gr flat nose, just got a mold for 160 gr flat nose, they shoot great to. Picked up a can of trail boss smokeless, just tried it out last week 5 gr sounded like a cap gun, almost no recoil. That stuff is good to start with a 45 colt case full to the top only holds 13 gr. Going to try 5.6 gr next week that is almost 25 gr by volume. I shoot out to about 100 yards with that carbine, and it soots great with just about anything. I split a ball on a ax head at 30 feet out at the desert and I am not a good shooter average at best.

Holy crap that is good shooting splitting a round ball on an ax head. If I try that I'd put my eye out. lol

Tinpan have you ever tried lee R.E.A.L. molded bullets in it?

I think the Lee r.e.a.l. bullets are made for muzzleloading rifles. The Remington is just a long barrel revolver. The 200 gr molds I have I got from cabelas, you can find them on there site under black powder accessories, the advertise them as 44 rem .450 black powder conicals remember you are limited to the capacity of the cylinder. I think with the 200 gr conical you could load about 30 maybe 35 gr of powder that's a pretty powerful load and you can push them in are enough with your fingers to clear the loading lever.m

R.E.A.L.s

I have read of many people using R.E.A.L,s in ruger old armys and they say they are more accurate than conicals and very accurate out to 50 yds.Just wondering if 1858s would be the same.

reals

R.E.A.L.s are muzzeloading bullets that are made from a mold made by lee.You can get all the details from the Lee website.

Looking at the length of the REAL cast bullets my only concern is that they appear to be much too long to fit in under the loading lever. So that would require an off gun loading jig. They would also reduce the amount of powder used due to the extra length. And lastly it would be iffy that the .45 caliber REAL bullet would cast out at the .452 to .454 size needed to get a good swaged seal in the cylinder.

At least wait for someone to reply that has the REAL mold and that can confirm the drop size before jumping in.

All in all I'd say it's best to stick to round ball or the conicals.

I've thought that the carbine would make a really cool hunting rifle. Since many use their large caliber rifles with light loads for small game I figure this would do well.

There are several guys who hunt with their pistols with great success so I don't see why a rifle wouldn't be a little better.

One of those guys prefers using RBs for <25 yds for hogs as he says the damage is much more significant than that of a conical/bullet.

How far out and for what would you use it for?

I've heard ruger old army's with R>E>A>L> bullets are good out to 50yds and good for up to deer size animals would be great if the uberti carbine would do the same for me

Do you have a sizing die? If they are a little too large maybe you could resize it so that it works. Looking at the profile I'd venture to guess that it would work OK as is. You could email them and ask what the dimensions are.

I believe I've read that Uberti chambers are .450"...
