1858 Uberti Remmy sticky pin

I have more rounds through the Remington than the Pietta Colt I own, but its all cuz I bought the R&D conversion for .45LC. I would love to shoot mor BP through the Remington, but must be doing something wrong.. 6 shots, and I have to use a mallet to get the cylinder pin out. I have been using the pellets, and as a Newbie cannot even recall the Manf. I think it starts with "F". On reading the threads here it seems I need to haul a can of Crisco with me. The other curiosity is that the Colt almost always leaves a lead ring on loading whereas the Uberti Remington does not. I use the same balls on both. I thought .44 meant .44, but I guess some 44's are bigger?

I love shooting the BP, but getting that dang pin out is so difficult I find the Long Colts easier. Its bad enough that I need to drive 40 minutes to get to an outdoor range here in Northern Virginia, (Clark Bros.) wish there was somewhere outdoors where I could plink at cans and such, and I sure don't like having to use a small tap hammer.

Its gonna take some lube expecially when they are new .. Crisco is fine as long as it ain`t a real hot day ..it`s messy when its 95 in the shade ..Anyway all you`ll need to use is a dab over 2 of the loaded cylinder holes this will be enough to keep her free and easy ..doesn`t matter which 2 eaither your pick . If the cylinder pin ever does freeze up again a splash of water in front of the cylinder where its face meets the pin is enough to free things up .So you don`t have to do all that beating on things .. in the summer i mix 50 /50 crisco and bees wax so it doesn`t run all over my gun hosters ...but in the cooler months i save the bees wax ..you can use a large surienge to squirt a little crisco in the 2 cylinder holes and really forget the mess .. i use horse wormer suringes and load up 3 or 4 at a time .If ya have horses or know anyone that does .. you can get these free .. maybe check with a vet , about his throwaways . the worm meds come in these and folks pitch`em after use . Myself, I use bore butter on the pin itself and place as much on it as I can, keeps things going. Every 3 cylinders I wipe the pin, put new lube on, and clean the barrel to keep accuracy.

Thanks guys, I think I'll try both crisco and bore butter. Will also start carrying a string with a wad tied on the end and do a pull through the barrel just to keep it clean.. I do carry a small bottle of BP cleaner, and will try a shot of liquid right where the cylinder meets the barrel and on the cylinder rod to see if it makes retraction any easier.http://www.thehighroad.org/images/smilies/wink.gif

I forgot to add that I use Crisco over the ball, but bore butter on the pin.

On my Remingtons, I lube the base pin with Ballistol and either put lube over the balls, or lubes wads between powder and ball. This usually gets me 3 or 4 cylinders before I pull the base pin, wipe it down, and add a few drops of Ballistol.

Ballistol works better on the pin than anything else I've ever tried. I'd definately recommend trying it.
