Hi,

I'm soon getting my first BP gun, which will be Uberti Remington 1858. What kind of tools will i need to get by. Nipple wrench, screwdriver...? And what size those have to be that i dont ruin any screws etc.

I don't have an Uberti Remington but my Grace USA Colt Peacemaker set of gunsmith screwdrivers work on all of my other Uberti, Pietta, ASM and Palmetto revolvers. Also have the Ruger set for the Old Army.

One of the best cone wrenches IMO are the ones from Track of the Wolf, the NW-130 should be the right one for your sixgun.

You can also custom make a cone wrench from a deep socket and make your own turn screws from bar stock, round stock or buy the set from DGW and then file them each for a perfect fit and then re-harden.

We also use Pistol Loading Rods PL-5 type from Track of the Wolf. These have a jag or we attach one, phosphor brushes and mops. Also use a short one to clean out the chambers with the mop. 3 in 1 tool, which is brass punch with cone pic comes in handy too.

I like to disassemble my revolvers into shoe-box sized plastic tubs, particularly if I am working on more than one at a time, to keep the parts from wandering away. I also use these tubs for wash and rinse water when cleaning revolvers. $1.00 each at the dollar store.

Lots of paper towels and Q-Tips too.

A set of surgical forceps, like the Halstead Mosquito Hemostats...real handy for grabbing little things in small spaces. I also use them at the range to remove cap fragments from that little spot behind the nipple that you can never reach with your finger, and if you could reach it the dang fragment would cut your finger anyway. You can find forceps at gunshows or in the fly fishing section of the sporting goods store, or ask a nurse friend to save you some disposables from work. Or Google them...available online.

You mean like the tweezers ones or the scissor like ones?

Definitely Grace USA for the screw drivers. I have the small set that Cabelas sells and use it on my new production Uberti 1858, I would also expect the peace maker set to be ideal. I tried to disassemble with a standard set and don't recommend it.

Can't recommend a nipple wrench, the one I have works but isn't great.

I'd recommend some pipe cleaners for cleaning those hard to reach spaces. You may also want a small, short wooden dowel to help put the flat mainspring back in. Wait til you get the gun first to find the right size.

I always use a bunch of pipe cleaners and they can be used over and over again just let them soak in soapy water and they clean right up. The best wrench I have is made by Track of the Wolf. I have a couple of them for over a decade and they have never broke or rounded off. They are just really well built.

There's simply no way to tell you which screw drivers to buy. Flat blade screwdrivers don't come in graduated sizes. At least I've yet to find any listed like that.

You're left with the option of buying a gunsmithing screwdriver set and hope that the sizes in it fit your gun.

A few years back I bought one of the smaller Wheeler sets. The tips in that set worked well on my own Uberti Remingtons.
