I'd really like to have a Cimmaron Open Top in 45 LC or 44 Spec. I love the grip on my 1860 Army and would like to have that Army grip on the Open Top. However; Cimmaron only offers the Army grip on the 7 1/2 inch 1871 version. The 5 1/2 inch that I'd like to have has the Navy grip. Am I right to assume the only differences in the 1871 and 1872 models are the grip frame?

The grip differences aren't really separated by years. It's simply known as the 1871-1872 "Open Top" with "early" and "late" grip variations. You are correct that the grip frame is the only difference. They used to offer the Army grip on all barrel lengths so you 'should' be able to find one somewhere. Seems like I saw some on Gunbroker this week. If not, you can always send the barrel off to be shortened and a dovetail front sight installed. Probably cheaper/easier than swapping the grip frame and grips.
