New 1872 Open Top

I finally saved up enough scratch to get a 1872 Uberti Open Top. I found one in .44 special with a 5 1/2" barrel from Buffalo Arms. Now to work up a load for it. Thanks to those who provided great, solid advice.

There is one in .44 Colt at a shop I frequent. Somehow that guy always has something cool for me to drool over...
Having said that, I really can't justify buying one in such an obscure caliber. It's a sweet gun to be sure though and if it was a .38 Special version (which I already reload for), I probably wouldn't have been able to pass it up.

Are you going to load smokeless or black powder?

I've been eyeballing that model for some time. I saw an original at a gun show yesterday and had a long talk with the owner. We may work out a trade for some 2nd gens I may be welling to part with.

Whether or not 44 Colt is "obscure" doesn't negate the revolver. I have two 72s, one is 44 Special and the other is 44 Colt, and I shoot them both with 44 Russian ammo. 44 Russian with 18 or a few more grains of BP (depending on bullet weight and wads, if any)is a fine shooting cartridge, recoil is like a 38, and the revolver balances MUCH better than a 38, which is too barrel heavy. They point like a Navy.

For .44 SPL, looks like Goex recommends a 205 gr bullet with 23 gr of FFFg, for 680 fps (barrel length not stated).

rcflint - the thing is the logistics. I like old timey guns but I don't like clutter. I'm like guns a lot but I don't feel an overwhelming need to have a whole lot of them around nor do I need the complexity that comes with them.
.44 Special I might have bought too because it's not THAT obscure. Same with .45 Colt. But a .44 Colt is just a bit too out there for me.
Now a .38 Special... already have brass, bullets, and even some loaded ammo for it. I could drop one of those in my collection tomorrow and take off with it!

FWIW, I think the .44 Colt is $325 and looks to be in great shape. It does have some evidence of someone trying to deepen the rear sight groove on the barrel. Were it me, I'd have had a smith put a taller front sight in a dovetail so I could work out a precise zero.

From reading the web page it doesn't mention about FFl dealer.Can this gun be sent to your home address like any bp gun?

You will have to order it through a FFL holder. I had my local shop fax a copy to Buffalo Arms. He charges $25 for the service.

Uberti provides a slew of caliber choices for their pistols. I've pretty much settled on .45 LC, just to stick with one type of ammo.
