Just talked to a fellow who has a Shiloh Sharps for sale (1874 in 45-70 but don't know the particulars other than he said a "big 'ol octagon barrell) new and unfired and also an 1874 copy of the Quigley gun marked "Taylors". I'll probably buy the Shiloh if I can afford it but I am curious, did Taylor's only sell Armi Sport Sharps repros? Could the "Taylors in question be made by Pedersoli?

The 1874 Sharps Down Under model is the most infamous model of the 1874 Sharps series. This model features doublet triggers, and a hartford style pewter tip. The Down Under also features a patch box and checkered stock and forend.

Overall Length: 51
Caliber: .45-70
Capacity: 1
Barrel: 34 inches
Manufacturer: Chiappa Firearms

I'd really stretch to get the Shiloh. A plain Shiloh is only about $300 more than that Chiappa.

Thank you. Researched Chiappa and found that the Chiappa Group makes a bunch of things. They own ( and once was) Armi Sport and that is the division making the repros and the target guns. I see reviews that place Armi Sports quality below that of Pedersoli, the only Italian Sharps I'd consider. I'll shoot for the Sharps ( pun intended) provided I can afford it provided it is a model I can reasonably use to hunt with. I want a 45-70 but not one with a 34 inch barrel and a cresent shaped iron butt. (well maybe 34 inches isn't so bad....i dunno)

In my opinion, the 34 inch, military butt Quigley Model was designed for one purpose only... to look good when carried onscreen by a tall actor. (They made up one with an aluminum barrel for long scenes not involving shooting.)

I shoot a little BPCR and barrels longer than 30 inches are scarce amongst target shooters. They are unwieldy to handle and prone to accumulate fouling in the extra length.
The Sharps military butt is small, and the stock crooked, a natural recoil amplifier.

Cross your fingers that the one you are offered has a 28-30 inch barrel and shotgun butt.

i have a 74 pedersoli target,a lever action marlin 95, a winchester high wall and a ruger #3 in 45-70 and i shoot them all,but for hunting i carry the ruger #3 with a 3x leupold. eastbank.
